Emsworth--

Who did you support in the 2004 presidential election, and why?  [If you don't mind me asking, of course]

Thanks

I supported John Kerry (and I still would if the election were held today). Of course, Kerry's fiscal policy would have been terrible, with spending probably rising quite a bit. But is Bush any better? He has been incapable of controlling spending, so he's no better than Kerry in that regard.

So the social issues would be the deciding factors. I was not particularly pleased with Bush's attempts to amend the Constitution over marriage; nor was I happy about his rather anti-civil liberties stances.

Sure, no problem. Might I ask why you wanted to know?

Because, honestly, from your posts I don't see you as having any connection to the Democratic party and/or what it stands for.  Yet I somewhat doubted you would have supported Bush, and you do have a red avatar.  So you're an enigma, and I wondered who you may have sided with.

Ah, I see. I've given up worrying about fiscal policy, since whether we have a Democratic or Republican Administration or Congress, the federal government will still be spending like drunken sailors. The social policy of the Democrats, however, is quite close to my views (excepting gun rights and affirmative action, perhaps).

If all you have in common with Democrats is in the area of social policy (at least somewhat), then may I ask why you don't simply join the Libertarian Party instead?

He has said that he doesn't like third parties, and feels the libertarians are too extreme in many of their views.

That's right. The Libertarian Party supports abolishing taxes and ending all U.S. involvement whatsoever in any other country, neither of which I agree with.

Still, what's preventing him from going out and trying to change the Libertarians from within, like John Dibble is trying to do?

He just responded in this thread, I'll let you read that.  But he probably realizes that he cannot change a political party.  He is just one man and the odds are stacked against him.

Especially since I won't even be able to vote until I become a citizen in a few years. Sad

From the party platform:

"The important principle in foreign policy should be the elimination of intervention by the United States government in the affairs of other nations. We favor a drastic reduction in cost and size of our total diplomatic establishment ... The United States should not inject itself into the internal matters of other nations, unless they have declared war upon or attacked the United States, or the U.S. is already in a constitutionally declared war with them.

Solutions: End the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid, guarantees, and diplomatic meddling."
