General Salvador Cienfuegos exonerated

AMLO isn’t stupid enough to risk angering the military and getting overthrown in a coup.

Is there a serious risk of a military coup in Mexico? Seems to me Mexico has one of the least politicized militaries in Latin America and there's been no coup for more than a century.

The PRI has staffed yes-men in power since the 1920s, taking the risk is not worth it to try and figure this out.

The former Governor of Puebla State, Mario Marin, was charged with orchestrating the illegal arrest and torture of a journalist investigating his protection of a pedophile ring.

Quote
Mexican authorities have arrested a former state governor on charges that he ordered the illegal arrest and torture of a prominent reporter who investigated his protection of a paedophile ring.

Mario Marín, the former governor of Puebla state, was scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday after he was detained the previous day in Acapulco.

Marín, of the Institutional Revolutionary party, took office as the governor of Puebla state in 2005. In the same year, the reporter Lydia Cacho published a book, The Demons of Eden, which implicated several wealthy businessmen in a paedophile ring.

In December 2005, Marín sent police from Puebla to arrest Cacho in Cancún on defamation charges. She was driven 20 hours to Puebla, during which time police taunted her, threatened her with rape and forced a gun into her mouth.

The case became a national scandal after a taped telephone conversation was leaked in which Marín was heard scheming with one of the men named in Cacho’s book.

Mexico is halfway to passing marijuana legalization.

Quote
Mexico is inching closer to becoming the world's largest legal cannabis market as lawmakers prepare to debate a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana.

The Chamber of Deputies, Congress' lower house similar to the U.S. House of Representatives, will take up the issue early next week, Martha Tagle Martínez, a member of the chamber's health committee, said in a series of tweets.

The Senate approved the legalization of medical marijuana almost four months ago, and two months later, the Health Ministry published rules to regulate the use of medicinal cannabis.

Former President Vicente Fox, who is on the board of global medical marijuana company Khiron Life Sciences Corp., said he sees the potential for Mexico to cash in on much-needed job creation, economic investment and medical advancements.

A regulated market could also help to lessen the cartel violence that has become synonymous with the country.

"Many great things will happen," he said. "We're taking away this beautiful plant from criminals and putting in the hands of retailers and farmers."

Terrible train crash just occurred in Mexico City. Bridge carrying a train near Olivos station collapsed.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/04/mexico-city-overpass-collapse-metro-train-carriages
At least 13 dead. No mention of a vehicle impacting the bridge or any other specific cause for the "support beam" failure.

"Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Twitter that a support beam had given way, causing the overpass to collapse.
The accident happened at around 10:30pm local time on the metro’s Line 12, also known as the Gold Line. It was opened in 2012."

A nine year old bridge suffered catastrophic structural failure? That makes me think some combination of shoddy construction and/or deferred (or non existent) maintenance will end up being the cause of the accident.

Yes, there were already calls to investigate Marcelo Ebrard’s term as mayor last night.

Why are govts so incompetent about this?  Oh yeah, it's their nature.  Mexican Supreme Court grows weary at Congress stalling, forces their hand
Quote
Mexico’s Supreme Court ordered the government Monday to issue permits for the personal use of marijuana and for the growing of limited amounts of pot plants, after the country’s Congress took too long to approve a limited legalization law.

In 2019, the court ruled that prohibiting marijuana was unconstitutional, and gave lawmakers until this past April 30 to pass a law. In March, the lower house approved a marijuana legalization bill, but it bogged down in the Senate.

Under Monday’s court ruling, people who want to smoke marijuana or grow a few pot plants for their own use can ask for a government permit until some legislation is enacted. They would have to be adults, abstain from using marijuana around children and refrain from driving or engaging in other risky activities while under the influence.

Similar permits have existed since 2015, but are granted only to people who file for court injunctions. Under Monday’s ruling, the Health Department would be required to accept applications for permits from the general public.

Somewhat late, but Hidalgo recently became the third Mexican state to decriminalize abortion for the first 12 weeks of a woman's pregnancy. Honestly, despite how disappointing AMLO has been, MORENA has been moving quickly on trying to push for decriminalizing abortion, passing gay marriage, etc. at the state level. All of the MORENA state legislators in Hidalgo voted to decriminalize abortion as an example, while all of the PRI and PAN voted against the measure.

Also, would talking about 2022 election polls be fine here? Or should that go in another thread entirely?

Seems to have passed overwhelmingly too unlike in Hidalgo. It'll be interesting to see if we continue to see a north/south divide in Mexico when it comes to abortion decriminalization.

I'm also very interested to see how the August 1st national referndum to put ex-presidents on trial does. I'm almost positive a majority vote for the referendum, but given the amount of voting stations available and needing a 40% turnout, things get tricky.

Yucatan joins Baja California and Sinaloa in legalizing gay marriage
Quote
With the decision, Yucatán became the third state, after Sinaloa and Baja California in June, to legalize same-sex marriage this year and the twenty-second state to recognize the rights of gender diverse people in Mexico.

By the end of this year, the states of Durango, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Veracruz are also expected to approve equal marriage law. The legislators of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party have vowed to push the bill in the states of Edomex, Querétaro and Tabasco when they assume the new local congresses.

Equal marriages are legal in Mexico. In November 2015, the SJCN declared unconstitutional the state civil codes that prevent same-sex marriages, however, almost a third of the states have resisted reforming their law. In those states, in order to access the right, the couples have to file for legal protection.
Thank you AMLO for all that you have done for the LGBTQ community.Let the haters seethe at how fabulous we all are.

Olga Sánchez Cordero is quitting the government to return to the senate. She’ll be replaced by Tabasco governor Adán Augusto López (ex-PRI and PRD).

I thought this would have been mentioned, but seeing PAN and Spain's far-right and ultraconservative VOX meet together with the goal of "stopping the spread of communism" is just a perfect representation of how bad the political opposition to AMLO is. There is a legitimate case to be made against AMLO and MORENA, but the opposition insists on shooting itself in the foot. This comes after promises of PAN moderating and modernizing itself.

Why would PAN moderate? It's a regular center-right party. Them meeting with Vox speaks more to Vox being a regular right wing party than anything else.

Vox is a far-right party, and I don't think they would even overly dissent from that categorisation.

Mexican Supreme Court effectively forcing Coahuila to pass abortion decriminalization/legalization with this ruling. This could effectively make abortion legal nationwide in Mexico if this is applied to all states.

Great step forward. I’ve never really understood why Mexican court rulings don’t apply beyond the parties at issue, but any step forward for abortion access is a good one.

According to ag they do, just not the same way in the US. The laws remain on the books but precedent is that they are unenforceable. So if someone was arrested for performing or receiving an abortion, they're unlikely to be prosecuted since even if convicted that prosecution would be likely immediately struck down.

Gay marriage is a great example, it's now de facto legal in Mexico due to a similar Supreme Court ruling. The laws banning in some states are still in effect but really toothless since if a same-sex couple applies for a marriage license and is denied, all they have to do is petition a judge who under that precedent will mandate the license be issued.
