If what you were saying is true, Trump never would've stood a chance and Bernie would've won enough Western and Northeast states to override Hillary in the delegate count.

No, its pretty clear that "what people want to hear" is precisely the best method to win... it's just that there are two bases to pander too and a politician has to sound like they believe what they say, because that is what they want to hear.
