Germany, the underdog to Mexico of all people.
Sad I guess, but Mexico is a cool team too.

Maybe the Germans should have asked Trump to build a proper wall in front of their goal to keep the Mexicans out ...

Most big teams seem to be in bad shape, or at least worse than they were four years ago.

Brazil will be fine. They have Neymar.

Well, Mexico deserved to win. They were better than the German team, especially in the first half. I'd actually like to see some country like Mexico to be world champion, because they are outsiders. Maybe Trump would congratulate them on Twitter lol.

FIFA will never let a team like Mexico win the tournament. The winner will be one of the usual suspects (Brazil, Germany, Argentina, France, Spain).

Brazil 1 Switzerland 1

The usual suspects all started out pretty badly. I'm afraid Belgium might have a chance after all if teams like Brazil and France keep playing like this. Or England lol.

I think it's just a conspiracy by the FIFA to give English supporters hope (only to crush it during the last 16 or last Cool. English supporters being extremely confident and hopeful before their dreams get crushed by Wales or Austria has been a pivotal part of every World Cup or European Championship (except for when they didn't qualify lol).

These are just the first matches, you can find examples in the past of teams that had a bad start and they still ended up in the final and even won: Argentina in 2014, Spain in 2010, France in 2006, Italy in 1994 or 1982...

The last game Brazil defeated a western european national team was the final of 2002, in which Brazil defeated Germany 2 0.

Then, Brazil defeated eastern european Croatia twice, in 2006 and 2014.

Brazil lost to France in 2006, tied to Portugal and lost to Netherlands in 2010, lost to Germany (7 1) and to Netherlands in 2014, tied to Switzerland in 2018.

Since the next opponents will be Costa Rica and Serbia, only in the next round Brazil will be able to break this sequence.

Germany had a similar streak. After the 1996 Euro final where they beat the Czechs their next win over a European opponent was in the 2006 World Cup when they defeated Poland in the group stage.

Oh my god I'm so happy right now.

So proud of my beautiful, diverse, open minded, multicultural country.

I watched the game at the fan zone in Plainpalais, surrounded by Albanians, Portugese, Erirtreans, Turrks,Moroccans all screaming with joy at that goal. Never felt more patriotic than I do right now

Mexico's goal was picked up by seismographs in Mexico City.

Saudi Arabia is more proof that the World Cup has too many teams. Imagine how much worse things will be in 2022 when it's expanded to 48.

By my back-of-the-napkin calculations, here are the additional teams that would be playing if this year's tournament had 48. Really it probably wouldn't be exactly like this, since qualifying would be structured differently if each confederation knew they had more slots, but this is an approximation of who else would be there:

Burkina Faso
Chile
Congo (DR)
Honduras
Italy
Ivory Coast
New Zealand
Northern Ireland
Syria
Trinidad & Tobago
Uganda
United Arab Emirates
United States
Uzbekistan

Also, 2 out of (China, Greece, Guatemala, Paraguay, Solomon Islands, Zambia) after a playoff

The Syrian players literally would only be allowed in if the Cup was in Russia, because otherwise, the host country wouldn't let them in the country.
If this was true, they would not have been able to visit other countries for the qualifiers.

I'm really enjoying this World Cup so far. Iceland managed to tie with Argentina. Germany lost to Mexico. Switzerland held Brazil to a tie. And the first game I watched (Spain/Portgual), even missing most of it, had one of the best endings (albeit due to a very stupid foul on the part of Spain).

So Sweden won, England escaped, and Belgium romped.

I think for tomorrow's matches, I'll take Colombia over Japan, Poland over Senegal, and a draw between Russia and Egypt.

You can add Colombia and Japan to your list...
