That’s not going to help rebuild America’s decimated industrial sector. Automation has made sure of that.

This is 100% true btw. Didn't automation cause 85% of the job losses in the manufacturing sector? Honestly, I wonder how we will tackle that. Taxing automation probably will destroy a lot of wealth, but just letting entire sectors die off also isn't very attractive. I guess we'll have to look into EITC expansion/wage subsidies.

This will be disastrous for the GOP in the midterms.

I dont think most Americans will notice any effects of this.

Nah, they'll express some frustrations and then do nothing.

What an idiot. Just going to make things more expensive. Factories aren't going to want to come back if construction is way more expensive!

Does Ben Sasse realize he already made America 1929 by passing the tax bill and deregulating Wall Street?

I’m guessing Trump will issue an exemption for the EU just like he did to countries in his other prior “tariffs”

This action is him lifting the prior exemption.

So basically the only country in the world that Trump doesn't want to impose tariffs on or to sanction is Russia.

Curious, that.

Exactly.
This is not just trump talking anymore.
What trump authorized is for the tariffs to take effect at midnight, tonight.

I'm actually really curious to see if and how Republicans react to this. In March, multiple republican senators suggested some kind of legislation to box Trump in on trade. McConnell stopped those efforts however because he thought Trump wouldn't go through with tariffs. Now that he has though, I wonder if McConnell has the balls to publicly humiliate Trump and legislate his tariff powers away. There is certainly 60 votes in the Senate.

On the bright side, Mexico said it will respond with tarrifs that mostly hurt Trump voting areas

They'll say some thing about how they're concerned about how the tariffs will affect America (Ben Sasse said something along these lines already), but they won't actually do anything about it.

With Kentucky Bourbon in the cross hairs, I at least expect McConnell to allow something to hit the Senate floor.

I'm actually concerned, and a bit indignant, about this.

Trump puts tariffs on steel and manufactured goods of China, Mexico, and the EU, while our trade adversaries can only retaliate by putting tariffs on crops and blue jeans?

Has the US fallen so far down the economic value chain that our adversaries can't even retaliate with "like-for-like" tariffs on US manufactured goods -- no one can put tariffs on, say, RVs or washing machines, because we don't make any.
