Nay.  The fact that 3 out of 4 Democrats on this thread support him is IMO very telling.

I would vote to confirm, although I would never have nominated him. Some of his views are rather, shall we say, unfortunate (especially on "right to privacy" issues), and he believes that the federal government can compel states to surrender sovereign immunity in certain cases, but on the whole, nothing so serious as to warrant rejection.

How humorous that Democrats try not to be partisan by supporting a Republican nominee, and an anti-Democratic hack votes Nay because of it.

I really like the guy, he's seems great. Lets just hope he's as good a judge as he was during the hearings.

I heard Clarence Thomas gave a similar answer on that.

What if Bush nominated a hot communist rebel?

Seriously, I think this is terribly flawed logic you seem to be using - just because someone you dislike nominates them doesn't mean their own merits should not first be considered.

I would vote no because of what I don't know. There are two many unanswered questions. I think we are getting another Souter or Kennedy, not a Rehnquist and definitely not a Thomas or Scalia. Bush has 55 Republican Senators. So he did not have to go with someone that we have many questions about. But I think he will be confirmed, 75 - 25 or so.

I don't think there have been any American citizen communist rebels since the 60/70s (Weather Underground).

Now this brings up a good poll though, would you vote for a female naturalized citizen from Colombia who was really hot and a former communist rebel.

I'd vote Yea.  I don't think it's fair to rat on the guy just because he was appointed by Bush.  But then again, the liberal version of John Roberts would probably be blocked by GOP congress.  Still, I'll go aye.

Interestingly, and I'll dig up the source later today but I remember the article very clearly (posted at Realclearpolitics a couple months ago), Ted Kennedy said that of Michael Luttig, John Roberts, and Michael McConnell, one was acceptable to him.

Roberts he has now opposed. Luttig I would have to imagine he'd oppose. And McConnell is openly against Roe. Maybe he lied, maybe he was drunk, or maybe he would vote for McConnell.

Obviously I would vote to confirm Roberts.

By the way, so I'm on the record, my prediction for the next nominee is Karen Williams of the 4th circuit.

note: I'm already, like an hour later, soured on my prediction. Too late now! I think Cantero out of Florida has an excellent shot.

Aye.

Will be very fine Chief Justice if you ask me... best of luck to him, and if I could vote I’d add that his performance before Senate Judiciary committee while skilful was hardly illuminating, but that aside from the evidence and background information available I’d still enthusiastically vote to confirm him.
