Todays students: A personal experience

As someone in their early twenties in my view the younger generation have segregated themselves off, in particularly, Muslim youth at my own university. Students in the past would have probably rallied against this but collectively we are all knackered. People made a few noises before the Iraq War but really we have more important financial pressures to worry about. There is a deep hatred for political correctness on campus and a general wary of the number of foreign Arabic nationals undertaking physics, chemistry and engineering. They are secretive, self isolating and i'm sorry to say generally unnapproachable.

I study Politics and History. Libertarianism has swept through most students, particularly when politics is discussed. Socialism is effectively dead and the core Left is now Liberal Democrat in support. Feminism is now derided, 'left wing' lecturers under attack in tutorials for ideals, once progressive, now seen as politically correct and irrelevent.

The Student Union has abolished Halal from the menu (it was all that was avaliable when I started) Right and Left wing groups have in theory been effectively banned from hard core socialists, Nazi wierdos to Islamic fundamentalists. There are mounting calls to abolish the 'Womens' representative on the Union since they now make up about 55% of the total intake and the Conservative Association has its highest numbers in nearly 30 years!

There is a very quiet revolution occurring within the 'red brick' universities and in the under 25's in total. Sure we are still collectively pissed off about Iraq and despise Bush but something is happening.

But thinking about it, students are doing what they always do; rebel against the establishement. Its just that now the establishment is left of centre, politically correct and financially frivolous.

Students in most Unis are as hypocritical, short sighted and unbearable as ever... ::)
Personally I think that top-up fees are a great idea...

Nice to see your Socialism still intact Al ;)

I agree, but I'm trying my upmost not to be!

Student politics has probably always been exaggerated as being more radical than it actually is. People pay too much attention to the ones who shout the loudest. A lot of students are surpisingly apathetic on a day-to-day routine.

The ones with the megaphones are usually Lyndon Larouche supporters. They're just crazy.
