I would personally bet that those making the comments were not even political at all; the stupidity and ignorance behind the actions do not strike me as something that would lead a person to a great interest in politics.

True. But if they were political, I seriously bet they would be Conservatives. I mean nothing partisan by that statement, but from what I have learned over time is that that is where the insensitive folks seem to gather. Not saying all conservatives are insensitive of course, and not saying all dippers are angels of course. While I think Richius is a trollish fellow, I do applaud him for this post, except for the part where he seems to blame the NDP. Toronto isn't even that NDP anyways. (Only 1 seat in the House of Commons and 3 in provincial parliament)

what I don't understand is why this is so gross, but lesbians making out is incredibly hot, as deemed by society.

Interesting point, and very true.  People in general, and particularly men, are not half as disgusted by lesbian sex as they are by male homosexuality.

I think on some level it has to do with the conundrum of what to do with two external sex organs, and the fact that no "suitable" opening exists for them in the male body.  Lesbianism doesn't present this problem.  Although oral sex has become increasingly mainstream, the idea of a man giving oral sex to another man is still considered repulsive by many.

There is not always a logical explanation for these things.

I've got to be honest, you would make me very uncomfortable.  My discomfort would be private.

I agree.  I find it uncomfortable to see public displays of affection between men.  I would also keep it private.

Well, seeing ugly people kiss makes me uncomfortable.  We all have our preferences.

Well, I've seen a number of state college campuses where this would have been no more approved of than it was in this instance. I think while some (many left of center folks) might be for extending privileges such as marriage to gays, they could still see it as not all that acceptable, especially publicly. It could kind of be viewed as "civil disobedience" to a great number of people, even to people who support something like gay marriage. Could be a little like someone who is for a right to carry law dropping his/her jaw at someone who comes in with a bunch of pistols strapped on. Because they're supportive of something doesn't follow that they will be in favor of, sympathetic to, or accept public displays. So they'll make comments or roll their eyes or whatnot.

Now me, I'm not where I would be likely to see this sort of thing more than a time to a few times a year, but I wouldn't have said/done a thing.

I also agree that I don't like public displays of affection. Not something I want to look at period. Most I've ever done is put my around her walking on the beach or something. But I'm nowhere close to 300 pounds and neither is she anywhere close to 200 or whatever either. Smiley

You get me all happy that you're pro-commmitment and then you have to go and say something like this.  Thanks a lot Richius Wink + Tongue

Well, while I would be uncomfortable with displays of homosexual affection, I wouldn’t say anything or whisper anything or even think anything against the people doing it, I just wouldn’t look.  I really don’t understand why you got such a hard time for holding hands, I’d get it if you kissed him, but holding hands is such a small thing.

I'll kiss him tomorrow in public and report back.  I'll make sure it is in the great hall during lunch time when a lot of people are around.

Not at first, only after I realized that they must be a couple.  I’ve never meet any homosexual in RL, so it would make me slightly uncomfortable.

Blame it on genetics.  Scientific studies have been done where they wired up straight men and straight woman to machines which measured their brain activity when shown images of males/ females together etc..  Straight males were shown to be put off or have zero effect by the images of men together. On the other hand straight woman were capable of being aroused by two women.  This conflicted with what many had presumed to be social conditioning re: straight men being turned off by male-male encounters.  I suppose it is hard wired in the male heterosexual mind to propagate the species- a contributing factor to why so many men have a hard time being faithful.

It actually caused a bit of commotion.  Some people were muttering bad words and slurs, others were glaring, and yet others were like, "get a room fags."  Oh well.

Maybe because you tried it in a cafeteria. A while back I even mentioned that the sight of two guys kissing is stomach-turning.

I'm telling you: kiss your boyfriend/significant other in front of a student reporter or even possibly local news cameras. The reaction from the assorted lefties will be entirely different.

Still, the name-calling is trashy and juvenile. I hope you gave 'em all the two-finger salute.

Somehow it seems through it all you got what you wanted: you successfully stirred up everyone and successfuly evoked a reaction.

So is obvious. If you do something with the thought in mind of evoking a reaction, don't whine when you get it.

Richius, if this makes you feel any better, I am quite turned-off by the sight of anyone making out in public, whether it's a heterosexual or homosexual couple. Holding hands isn't bothersome, but making out for extended periods of time should be left private. I generally find heterosexual people who make out in an exaggeratedly blatant fashion and then turn around and criticise homosexual people for doing something more minor (holding hands) hypocritical and obnoxious (although I still don't fancy a gay/lesbian couple making out in public, I don't fancy a heterosexual couple making out in public, either).

I have to admit, though, sometimes I feel like doing things to cause a reaction. The only problem is dealing with the reaction. In this case, well, people evidently didn't like it when you kissed your friend, so that's too bad, though not unexpected.
