How do you think 1920 would have looked if Hughes had won in 1916?  I think the unpopularity of the war would have dragged Hughes down, though not as much as it did Cox since Wilson was more anti-war than Hughes. Would the Democrat have defeated Hughes? Who would have been the Democrat? I think Hughes would be defeated if the war ended as in our timeline, albeit more narrowly than our 1920. Would this butterfly Harding-Coolige-Hoover? Maybe even butterfly FDR and the New Deal? I think 1916 is often overlooked, but it was a pretty impactful election.

I think the post-war economic sludge could've been enough to take down Hughes and give us President Cox.

Almost certainly - or maybe ex-President Wilson if his health holds.

The cost of living had soared during the war years, with food prices far outpacing wages. That, far more than the war or the League of Nations debate, was what sank the Democrats in 1920, and would equally have sunk the Republicans had they been in power.
