I favour the legalisation of prostitution.  I do not think the government should control what a woman does with her own body when it is not affecting another person.

That having been said, am I the only one who finds it odd that the creation of pornographic films is legal, but not prostitution?  In one case, two people are being paid to have sex; in the other, one person pays the other to have sex with them.

I find that a lot of anti-prostitution arguments also work as anti-creation of pornography arguments.  But I've never heard anyone suggest banning all pornography (besides a few far, far right-wingers and radical feminists).

Would you make streetwalking illegal?

I favor the legalization of prostitution of consenting persons of working age, based on moral and public-health reasons.

It probably should be legal with little to no regulation.  But I have a better idea that makes the government money.

Set up 'prostitution houses', run by the government, with government employees as the prostitutes.  For a fee, you may go have sex with a prostitute--plus a 50% tax on the fee.  That earns the government billions of dollars per year.

... because the government has no right to ban it.

If the government run prostitution, it would top being worth it in no time.

It should never be legalized.  It degrades women, and is simply unethical.

Thanks, but I already pay a lot of money every year for government workers to screw me.

I'll quote George Carlin on this one:

"Sex is legal.  Selling things is legal.  Why the hell is selling sex not legal?"

Quite honestly, I can't see a lot that would be a problem with this, and I can certainly see a lot of benefits with it, such as the fact that basic safety standards could be put into place, greatly decreasing the possibility of diseases being spread through the process.  Plus, if it was out in the open, that would prevent the sort of thing where the girls', ahem, "employer" prevented them from leaving through threats of violence or something like that.

I don't see how it could lead to any sort of moral degradation, given that those who are willing to pay money for sex are likely to do it anyway even if it's illegal; all I can see the legalization of prostitution leading to is a large improvement of working conditions.

I agree, but I think it not only degrades women, but anyone who participates in it.

Prostitution should certainly be legal. The fundamental purpose of government should be to protect the rights of the people, not to impose "morality" on society. I personally find the practice reprehensible and degrading, but, still, I see no reason to make the practice unlawful.

If people are concerned about "public health," then prostitution should be legalized and regulated, for unregulated illegal prostitution is far more dangerous to the "public health."

Can you define rights without a moral code?

An opposition to coercion is sufficient to establish all fundamental rights.

Never thought that a political discussion in the AF would be so far removed from reality as this one, but here goes:

Absolutely opposed, for public health and criminal concerns.

The amount of money that the government could make on "taxing" prostitution (f*ing idiotic to think that a prostitute will be willing to take  out 20% income tax on her trick; don't be stupid, people!) would be more than wasted on the policing and medication of the clients.

Then you would support legal prostitution without coercive elements such as regulation and tax?

I oppose prostitution for moral reasons, and to a lesser degree, for public health and safety concerns.

If sex that is not performed for money is unregulated, then sex that is performed for money should be equally unregulated.

Taxes should be to raise revenue; I accordingly oppose "sin taxes."

I don't think one man's actions (or one woman's) can degrade an enitre gender.  I don't see how.
