Both John Kerry and Mitt Romney are from Massachusetts, they almost ressemble, they both have a fluency in French, they both ran for President and won their parties' nominations, were both labeled as flip-floppers due to their changing positions and both lost a general election against an incumbent president, the moreover that Kerry played Romney in Barack Obama's debate preparations in 2012.

But who between John Kerry and Mitt Romney would win in a general election match-up between them and why? If you want, show the maps.

Even if I despise Mitt for being a flip-flopper, Kerry lost to Bush in 2004 when Bush was pretty open for defeat. so I would have to give it to Romney:

Romney: 279
Kerry: 259

I don’t think this would be close.

Romney would win this fairly easily.

Both lost winnable elections in 2004 and 2012 respectively. I'd say a toss up.

To be fair, Kerry probably only got the nomination due to Dean and Gephardt having destroyed each other in Iowa, Clark's campaign having floundered and Graham having to pull out after a heart attack.

doesn't exclude that 2012 was winnable but Romney lost it. Also, SANTOURUM was challenging Romney! that, no matter what you think, shows how bad Romney was.

This. Also,  Unemployment was also north of 8% for most of 2012 (although it was still an improvement from late 2009-mid 2011) and if I remember correctly GDP growth was still under 2%. Granted, I voted for Obama in 2012 and have no regrets about it to this day, but even I think he was beatable in '12.

Kerry would win during or after 2008, Romney before.

Something I just remarked : another thing that Romney and Kerry have in common is that they were both challenged by a former House Leader in their party's primaries. Kerry was running at the same time as Dick Gephardt in 2004 and Mitt Romney was competing with Newt Gingrich in 2012.

Kerry only needed one state and aimed precisely as needed, Romney deluded himself and blew in needed places.

Kerry ran in the middle of good circumstances and at the height of patriotic fervor, this favors an incumbent, Romney ran in the middle of a recession. Clearly then Obama was more beatable than Bush.

And with that, the answer then is clearly Kerry.

By the way, another thing Mitt Romney and John Kerry have in common is that they both selected running mates who failed to deliver their home states to their ticket. Kerry selected John Edwards as his running mate in 2004 but Edwards has failed to deliver his home state of North Carolina to the Democratic ticket. In 2012, Romney selected Paul Ryan as his running mate but Ryan failed to deliver his home state of Wisconsin to Romney.
