Claremont serial killer trial: Week 2, Day 8

"Luckiest Women in the World" award goes to:

1. Annabelle Bushell; and
2. Trilby Smith.

Annabelle was blind drunk when she and Trilby accepted a lift from the alleged Claremont serial killer in his car after midnight.

The thing that potentially saved her life was 5 minutes into the journey. "I had a strong instinct to get out of the car."

Her friend was falling asleep in the back seat and she grabbed her friend and jumped out at a red light intersection (coincidentally at the same intersection where the other girls disappeared).

Claremont serial killer trial: Week 2, Day 9

Some incredibly sad and heart breaking details about the night the first victim went missing.

https://omny.fm/shows/the-claremont-serial-killings/missing-sarah

On January 26, 1996, 18-year-old Sarah Spiers disappeared after a night out in the wealthy enclave.

The fun-loving teenager had been celebrating Australia Day with a group of girlfriends, beginning their evening at the popular Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe.

At the time, I remember thinking it was a taxi driver who abducted these girls. Why would intelligent young women get in a strangers car late at night?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-05/claremont-serial-killings-trial-hears-of-telstra-van-man-lift/11768998

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-28/map-spiers-mobile/9489200 (ABC NEWS)

Some of the witnesses who survived after getting in the car with the accused killer have recalled in this trial that they thought he was a taxi driver working because he had a telco logo on the side of his car and he wasn't drunk.

One woman, Katrina Jones, who survived said a man in a telco labelled car tried to kiss her after she got out of the car after accepting a lift after midnight.

Claremont serial killer trial: Week 3, Day 11

Warning: extremely graphic events depicted.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-09/bradley-edwards-karrakatta-rape-victim-testifies-claremont-trial/11780220

The nature of this trial and the demented behaviour of the person responsible for these crimes is unprecedented in this city.

The accused, Bradley John Edwards, has already plead guilty to this crime.

Accused not seen in CCTV footage. My girlfriend in 2020 was at the Continental Hotel in 1997 on the night Ciara Glennon was abducted. My girlfriend was also friends with Ciara Glennon from high school.

Small world.

Claremont serial killer trial: Week 3, Day 14

2nd victim disappearance discussed with never before heard evidence about her last moments.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-12/claremont-serial-killings-trial-told-womans-screams-jane-rimmer/11793142

And we hear from associates of the third victim, Ciara Glennon.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wa/claremont-serial-killings-trial-ciara-glennons-continental-hotel-visit-piqued-parents-fears-ng-b881410003z

After reading this, my girlfriend who went to school with Ciara wrote:

"Ciara was nice she never bitched about anyone.  It was like she had this inner turmoil bubbling ready to explode  a tight spring just waiting for the day she could relax."

Unfortunately for the young attractive lawyer, her hard earned dreams never eventuated after she was abducted in 1997 by the Claremont Serial Killer.

For 22 years, her parents, Dennis and Una (a teacher at Ciara's school) have had no answers. The next couple of months in Court will reveal what really happened.

The trial hears witness accounts of the discovery of the 3rd victim, Ciara Glennon, and protection of the crime scene, and the Perth media frenzy that ensued.

https://omny.fm/shows/the-claremont-serial-killings/the-crime-scenes

The body was randomly discovered by a man looking for clandestine marijuana crops in the area. It was found approximately 3 weeks after Ciara went missing.

It was the only body with the alleged killers DNA under the victims fingernails.

The first victim is still missing, and Jane Rimmer was in an advanced stage of decomposition, making forensic analysis for DNA impossible.

One of the risks that females face in the remote outback of Australia.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-21/gayle-woodford-violent-sexual-offender-released-before-killing/11876640

Previously convicted violent sex offender, Dudley Davey was this week jailed for life with a 32-year non-parole period after being convicted of the rape and murder of 56yo nurse, Gayle Woodford.

He was recommended not to be released at the time of the crime

Jane Farrin, director of the Sentence Management Unit at the Department for Correctional Services, told the inquest her department recommended Davey not be released on parole before Ms Woodford's murder.

Reminiscent of a brutal crime in my own state committed against innocent young female tourists in 2006.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2007-04-24/wa-man-gets-12-yrs-for-beating-raping-tourists/2531056

Serial rapist David Gundari was freed in 2018 after serving a 12 year sentence for savagely bashing and raping a Japanese woman and a French woman, who lost all of her front teeth in a prolonged sexual attack.

Gundari, who the WA Prisoners Review Board found to be at "medium to high … risk of reoffending in a sexual manner" after his September 2018 release, started criminally reoffending within 3 days of his release.

He was arrested in the outback town of Katherine on October 8 2018 and charged with engaging in violent conduct in Katherine East on September 29 2018 and one count of breaching bail.

Gundari was found guilty of both charges and jailed for two months and one week.

Two further counts of aggravated assault were withdrawn.

So this meams, in 2020, we have a serial rapist who savagely attacked two young tourists 14 years ago roaming free around the countryside totally unsupervised, and is according to the WA Prisoners Review Board, a "medium to high risk of reoffending in a sexual manner".

Criminal Justice system has a lot to answer for in this case.

Here is a very interesting case with first details released today after 2.5 years of waiting for information.

In Perth, Western Australia in December 2017, a young man and his sister were supposedly set upon by 5 youths in a park near their home.

Once their older sister, Aya Hismeh, 22, found out about the confrontation, she got in her car, tracked down the alleged assailants and as illustrated in graphic video evidence, allegedly ran over four of them in her car at 80 kilometres per hour, killing 17 yo Jacob Cummins and seriously injuring his three friends.

Aya Hismeh: Source Instagram.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-31/aya-hishmeh-on-trial-accused-of-jacob-cummins-murder-in-perth/11913830

A very poor outcome for all involved.

The trial is expected to run for four weeks.

A seemingly similar incident involving pedestrians and a car. Whilst technically an accident, due to the indications of the driver being affected by alcohol, this will be investigated as a criminal matter.

Claremont Serial Killer Trial: Day 43

Lot's of delays and adjournments relating to missing DNA evidence which was not disclosed during the discovery phase of the trial.

This helps the defence case as it argues inconsistencies and problems with the DNA collection process. The only hope for Bradley Edwards of being found not guilty is if the defence lawyer can show that the DNA sampling process was contaminated.

Also, it was revealed 17,000 men sampled for DNA as part of the 15-20 year investigation into the serial killings.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/claremont-serial-killings/claremont-serial-killings-trial-podcast-newly-discovered-evidence-ng-b881460939z

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-12/claremont-serial-killings-trial-delayed-up-to-17000-dna-tested/11958252

Audio description:
https://omny.fm/shows/the-claremont-serial-killings/newly-discovered-evidence

They were investigating Telstra workers in 1997-2000, and they even had Bradley Edwards convicted of assaulting a female co-worker from 1992 in the area, but it would almost appear they DNA tested every suspect but him.

The police investigators and the scientists responsible for collecting DNA evidence are not coming out of this looking very professional. I know TV shows like Mindhunter make it look easy, but there are some really stupid developments in this trial which illustrate the arrogance and low level intellect of the WA Police tasked with investigating this crime at the time.

In fact, major developments in the case leading to the ultimate arrest of a very strong suspect did not occur until 15-20 years later when an entirely new team were established and thought about it from scratch.

Claremont Serial Killer Trial: Day 46.

In the longest standing case since BTK of a serial killer, the Perth case of Bradley Edwards heard today about new avenues of investigation in the period when the Police had no suspects.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-18/claremont-serial-killings-trial-evidence-bloodstained-brick/11971776

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/claremont-serial-killings/claremont-serial-killings-trial-podcast-leather-gloves-and-fingernails-in-taxis-ng-b881465279z

Leather gloves, tree branches and bricks were analyzed for DNA through blood analysis, and in one case, contamination with other victims were discovered, raising an avenue for the defence to say the lab was not of a sufficient quality to say 100% that the DNA samples of the accused were in fact related to the final victim, Ciara Glennon.

Claremont Serial Killer Trial - Day 53

Police describe the forensic evidence that was researched as a cold case which ultimately led to them to identifying the suspect, Bradley John Edwards, who is currently on trial as the suspected Claremont Serial Killer.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/claremont-serial-killings/claremont-serial-killings-trial-podcast-the-random-test-that-changed-the-investigation-ng-b881475056z

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-27/claremont-serial-killer-dna-evidence-contaminated-court-told/12007598

The defence is arguing DNA contamination as their sole argument.

Claremont Serial Killer Trial - Day 54

The defence has revealed their case.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-29/claremont-serial-killings-defence-case-finally-comes-to-fore/12010042

DNA contamination has been raised quietly amongst a few people previously I have spoken to.

Only two fingernail scrapings of this mans DNA were found on the last victim. Her last actions before dying meant his DNA was under her fingernails and matched previous rapes and sexual assaults which he has already plead guilty to.

I think he is toast, but the thought of him being found not guilty is making a lot of people nervous.

Claremont Serial Killer Trial - Day 58.

No doubt now that this guy is heading for a conviction as the Claremont serial killer.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-05/claremont-serial-killer-trial-forensic-evidence-under-scrutiny/12025908

It would have been impossible to contaminate the fingernail samples of the final victim with previously held samples.

The previously held samples were not opened anywhere near the time frame concerned.

The defense has not raised legitimate doubt about why his DNA is underneath the fingernails of Ciara Glennon.

Lab error was their only chance.
