Can anyone imagine Bobby not wholeheartedly endorsing his brother?
I needed to make Ted lose somehow.

It makes sense to me. RFK wanted to be neutral in order to allow a proper process in the Dem primary and so that people don't claim the Kennedys are entitled and get what they want thanks to their family.
Yeah an endorsement could backfire due to allegations of favoritism or possibly nepotism (is it still considered nepotism if RFK isn't actually giving EMK a job based on their being related?)

Especially considering how he got his job as Attorney General in the first place. He had to work hard to shake off those allegations.

"When did I know my candidacy was scaring Reagan? When I saw an attack ad against me in December of '79 while I was watching Rudolf with the grandkids."

Mark Hatfield wants you to think he's just another Republican. That he represents the base of the party. But he's dead wrong. Hatfield is a west coast liberal who wants to raise taxes, increase the size of government and make America step back from the global stage. Vote and caucus for Ronald Reagan. There's too much at stake.

"I enjoyed the hell out of it because we had him on the ropes! We had him running!"

"The original plan was to completely ignore Hatfield, which I didn't like, of course. But polling had him within 10 in Iowa -- and Hatfield was spending so much damn time in Iowa you'd think he was their third Senator. Sears, that [expletive] moron, wanted the President not to campaign in the primaries. It wasn't 'Presidential'. Nothing about running for President of the United [expletive] States is Presidential!"

"While Hatfield was chopping Reagan at the knees, the Democratic electorate was totally divided. Brown was picking up a lot of students. Carter had the southerners. And Ed and Ted were splitting the rest of them -- both were trying to play up the Heir of Bobby thing. Ted had the last name and the looks, but Ed was Secretary of State for four years."

Poll of Registered Democrats in Iowa, December 29, 1979
Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy - 30.7
Former Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie - 28.9
California Governor Jerry Brown - 22.3
Former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter - 16.6
Undecided: 1.5

"A lot of people were in camps very quickly. Undecideds were microscopic, especially in the early states. The debates were our chance to win over Kennedy and Brown voters."

Is anyone challenging Reagan for the Republican nomination like Kennedy challenged Carter in 1980?

Thanks. I have a term paper on the role of social media in the 2016 election for one class and a term paper on homelessness in the city of Portland (which I'm interviewing the mayor, a state legislator, some city councillors) in another. It'll be a drag.

"And at that time, we were struggling to find a potential running mate for President Reagan. We knew Hatfield was surging, but we didn't think he'd actually beat us to the nomination. But no one wanted to join Reagan on the ticket."

Part III: Debate Night '79
"Teddy and Carter both didn't want to attack him on the trip, because Brown was highly thought-of among the liberal base. He had Jesse Jackson's endorsement, for example. But when I brought it up, Ed sat bolt upright in his chair, and he said three words: 'let's hit him.'"

Listen, I went on a little vacation. I don't know what the big deal is. Lots of people go on vacation, I went with my girlfriend. We had a wonderful time. If I'm going to be President, I'm not going to be able to go on vacation, because we have a lot of things we need to work on in Washington.

"Governor, you can joke about this if you like. But the people of this country need a President whose first priority is the life and livelihoods of Americans. During your vacation, I met with dozens of Americans, who are struggling. Their sons are in Iran for reasons we don't understand. Their children are in crumbling schools. They're afraid that the water coming from their faucets is poisonous, they're afraid the air is toxic, they're afraid that their government is more concerned about the wealthy than the middle class. And you know what? They should be afraid. I'm running so that they may not be afraid any more."

"We hit the jackpot."
