^Never confuse intelligence with being right about things. Partisans do themselves and their arguments a disservice by doing so.

Plus Madison, Wisconsin is clearly not a particularly dumb town. A town that occasionally has a tenuous relationship with the wider reality, yes. A dumb one, no. Madison is a town of big idea, just not all of them happen to be good ideas.
