Yes it is. It is the dumbest thing one can ever do. At least with harder drugs you can trip and get some cool effects. What do you get with smoking? Nothing but smelling bad, stained teeth and lung cancer. Plus an addiction that costs you lots of cash. People think I spend too much on strip clubs, but I bet I have spent a smaller percentage at them than most smokers have on cigarettes. I sometimes think about how much money I would waste if I did smoke. A lot less strip clubs and records. Bleh. The only advantage I can honestly see to this insanely moronic thing is you can possibly start a conversation with another smoker by asking for a light.

That's why I never have any sympathy for smokers. Smoking bans passed, cigarette taxes increased? Don't care. If it bothers you, quite your utterly moronic and disgusitng habit. Personally I'd like to see tobacco taxes increase to NYC levels nationwide, which would make them around $8 a pack I believe. One day I hope to see the evil CEOs of Philip Morris starving on the streets. Those pieces of sh!t deserve it.

Cigarette taxes should be set extremely high (8-12 a pack), simply because it hurts the smoker and can be used to lower normal American's taxes. People are going to do it even if it costs them that much a pack, so it only makes sense to set them high. I have zero sympathy for those smokers who keep shelling out money for cartons every week.

Yes it is, it costs too much money--although I oppose smoking bans.

Anyways, I voted yes, but I don't believe in punishing smokers for their habit.

No, it isn't stupid.  Believing it is stupid shows a lack of understanding of human mortality.

Also I don't think cigarettes should be taxed differently than anything else.

Even though I smoke when I drink and used to be a 1-1.5 pack a day smoker, I'm gonna say yes.  Should have never started the habit.

In the words of Sir Humphrey:

"Yes, but cigarette taxes pay for a third of the cost of the National Health Service. We are saving many more lives than we otherwise could because of those smokers who voluntary lay down their lives for their friends. Smokers are national benefactors."

If everyone obeyed the law about smoking (waited until they were 18 to start), not enough people would start smoking to keep the tobacco companies in business.   When they start at that age they believe that they wont get addicted to it and they will be able to stop smoking any time they want.  It happens today, I saw it happen 30 years ago, and my dad saw the same thing when he was a kid in the thirties.  Some things never change.

Crass wording aside, I would have to say yes; smoking is the willful ingestion of toxic substances that will almost certainly lead to a drastically shortened life if it becomes a chronic habit.

Now, the one part that BRTD will not like is that I also feel that doing other drugs and the heavy use of alcohol is also equally stupid. Smiley

Yeah it's stupid, but whatever.

BRTD hates Islam, smoking, and suburbs. Weird combination.

If you smoke everyday, you'll get lung cancer.

If you have a drink everyday, you'll be fine.

If you drink excessively, you'll kill your liver (I assume thats what you're talking about).

Doing either excessively is pretty bad -- but thats what college is for.

No. Alcohol affects your judgment and mental apabilities, and tobacco doesn't.

Well, duh. In short term, yeah.

In long term, I think smoking is much worse.

It's funny how some of the same people who have no problem with drug use are vehemently anti-smoking.  It makes no sense.

Depends on the amount, really. Small amounts every now and then won't do you much harm, and aren't addictive as nicotine, so you are more likely to be able to stay in moderation. Excess of either is what's bad. I'd say in moderation smoking is worse, but in excess alcohol is.

I voted no

The initial decision to start smoking is quite stupid, yes (even though it usually has more to do with peer pressure etc. than an actual choice) but after that point it's not like smokers have a great deal of choice; nicotine is an extremely addictive substance and kicking the "habit" (as if being addicted to something like nicotine is just a "habit") is extremely hard.

Would you consider an alcoholic to be "fcuking stupid"? And by alcoholic I don't mean someone who chooses to get pissed every night (they are "fcuking stupid", btw) I mean someone who is actually addicted to alcohol; one drink becomes five, ten, twenty... they don't really have any control over what they are doing, and neither do smokers. And nicotine is much, much more addictive than alcohol...

Oh and for the record, I don't smoke, hardly ever drink and the only drugs I take are prescribed to me for various medical conditions.

Al, haven't you figured out that anybody who doesn't agree with BRTD's strange concoction of ideas in every area is "fcuking stupid."  BRTD is such a prodigy; he has everything in the world figured out at 21 years old.  What do old guys like you know?

Quite. At this point in time, I pay more tobacco tax than I do income tax

Well, there're no hallucigenic effects of smoking, but I've had some really bad days where I buy a black and mild and, although it's not gonna cure anything, it does elevate my mood.  And it's rare that I smoke.

That's pretty funny.  How do you know?  Of course, there's physical age and mental age.
