Pros-

- Kick ass unilateral neoconservatism, avenging 9/11 all day every day
- President Bush
- Stupidity like anti-vax, flat Earth, luddism, and anti-Semitism weren't a part of mainstream political discourse
- Awesome post-grunge and punk rock music

Cons-

- No gay marriage

What do you guys think?

Probably best to bring a pre-9/11 world. I certainly would like to see the world carry on without the United States going collectively insane.

We should go back to the years 1998-2000 but with gay marriage and YouTube.

I'd probably take it any day over what we've got now, especially the last few months before 9/11.

I'd be all for European '01-'04. You could buy beer at 16 and women were topless on most beaches.

For me, that's definitely been the case, thanks to abusive parents, institutionalization, medicated with things that cause anxiety, and inability to make friends.

In some ways America was much healthier then than it is now, but your first point brings up all the worst points of that era.

I wonder what happened to that. I feel like over the course of the 00s, teen angst got replaced by defeatism.

The Pre-Iraq War Blair years sound pretty decent compared to the chaos of Brexit negotiations and the constant drumbeat of Trump's appalling decision making.

You could buy beer at 16 and women were topless on most beaches.

You're image of "Europe" seems to be one that's come from watching far too much sh**tty films or television rather than actually experiencing it.

You still can do the former in much of Europe - and if you can't legally you can in practice in lots of the remainder since they are... lax in enforcing ID rules and the latter has never been true: at least any more than on most beaches in the world.

Eh, back in the day, if you went down to Genève Plage or the Bains des Paquis (both are pretty standard swimming pools/lakeside beaches) during the summer you would see a few women going around topless, but it was only ever a small minority and I've never seen anyone under the age of about 40 doing it. So not an especially exciting site all things considered.

But yeah, 16 is still the drinking age, which is sensible seeing as it kills off the "thrill" of underage drinking by the time you start to get interesting in trying it.

Uh, I'd rather live when 9/11 has already been avenged and the main guy responsible for it is dead. Aka the past almost 7 years.
