Anyone who protests that all the sudden Assange is being held in federal detention all of the sudden can swiftly be given real things to cry about. I mean. It could be worse. For good reason, Mueller has been working with state prosecutors in at least New York state for violation of state laws (such as evasion of state income and use taxes) for which the President has no power of pardon.

I can imagine Trump pardoning him, but he would have to get Paul Man-o'-Fraud out of the United States very fast, most likely to Russia... by way of Cuba, if necessary.

I suspect that Paul Man-o-'Fraud is satisfied that the fix is all but in, and that a Presidential pardon ensures that he has no bigger problem to face than Russian winters.

What choice did he have? admit to conspiring with a hostile foreign government to commit election fraud or perjure himself in the hopes he won't get caught (if he gets caught he has both things to worry about but Trump should know a thing or two about gambling so...)

No, because that specific offence has been abolished in England and Wales. Along with specific felony/misdemeanour distinctions.
