Well, without anesthetics, no, as mentioned that would be cruel and unusual. However, I'd say that if a rapist is released and then convicted a second time, then castration is an option since ordinary reform clearly won't work.

But it psychologically damages the rape victim forever. If the victim was a virgin it takes away that forever.

That does not take into account the fact that an innocent person may be convicted of rape, castrated, and later be exonerated. Indeed, innocents have been convicted of rape on numerous occasions. Therefore, I would oppose this kind of "irreversible" punishment on practical grounds, as I would also the death penalty, for a crime that is not of the gravest and most serious kind (such as treason or terrorism).

Or, they could just be sentenced to life with hard labor. Such a sentence would be infinitely more beneficial to the government, while still not posing any threat or causing any danger to the people.

Of course, you could also argue that there's a very easy way to prevent the castration: don't rape people.  Rape is pretty much the least accidental crime out there.

Your ignorance is truly astonishing. Rape has existed even in places where prostitution was/is legal throughout history, it's virtually impossible to outright eliminate it.
