I'm always a fan of ways to avoid taking a stance on something.

I don't even think states should be more than administrative jurisdictions, so of course I find this to be an awful idea. Besides, counties have such arbitrary boundaries.

Nah, counties should only be local government entities.

Pretty good though it does depend a lot on the particularities of each state. "County rights" are probably something better suited for large states where the state government can't micro-manage everything. Probably Hawaii as well because islands.

Depends what those rights are. I strongly support more power going down to the state level all the way down to the municipal level.

I do support giving county governments more powers if they're expected to do some things.  Pne of the biggest problems South Carolina has is that it delegates responsibilities to local governments and then limits the ability of those local governments to fund doing them.

Wish it was more of a thing just so people in Cook county could stop telling me what to do.

Ask Wisconsin conservatives. They want county/city rights, but not for the liberal areas, those should be controlled by the state. Roll Eyes

I support municiapalism, given that localities can often be more democratic in their decision-making; but I'm less sure about "counties" given that most American counties are arbitrarily drawn and elected via stupid ways (e.g. bloc voting or with a heavy focus on executive figures over a representational legislative body)

County legislatures can be even more hideously gerrymandered than state ones. Sometimes a powerful at-large elected official is more representative of a county than the county legislature.

that's why I support STV at all levels of American government - federal, state and all layers of local government.

All levels of government should be understood to have powers, not rights.

And the concept is a sound one; governmental powers should be split up, not concentrated in the hands of a few; and the split should be both horizontally (separation of powers; legislative, executive, judicial) and vertically.

STV can be a good alternative to FPTP. I am a fan of preferential voting.

I am quite thankful that Johnson County, IA doesn't have too many rights against the Iowa state government, LOL.

A bit of a misnomer, since counties are just administrative jurisdictions of the state whereas states are component organizations of the Federal government.
