I am trying to convince myself that this is not reality. Of course Spirit is beyond messed up for freaking out over a freaking hamster. But if this is true, then this girl is not free from guilt. How could this have been the best option? Everyone here is responsible for animal torture and it infuriates me.

Hamsters can definitely be used for emotional support.

And since I had a hamster in the past, and just bought a new hamster a few weeks ago, this story is supremely disturbing to me.

Yep, this is the main problem I have with her. Not exactly the brightest bulb in the box.

I'm pretty much disgusted with everyone involved here.  The least she could've done was have PETA pick it up so they could kill it in their extermination warehouse.

Any animal can be an emotional support animal as long as a signed document from a mental health professional verifies that it is not merely a pet.

However, most airlines have their own sets of requirements of certain restrictions and things they need in order to bring an emotional support animal onto a plane, something she should have done before trying to bring it with her.

That being said, both sides in this are pretty gross about how they handled this.

Wait, what?

The headline doesn't reflect this at all. She actually did it?!?! What the hell?!

Until they beat you up....

Spirit kills your pets
United beats you up
Southwest is just bad
American hits mothers with strollers
Delta stands for Don't Ever Leave The Airport

...and Virgin no longer exists (Press F to pay respects).

There's no good option.

Compared to the others, Southwest's incidents are not as bad and not as many.

Not to mention 21 is definitely not too young to rent a car in the US, so something clearly is not right here. Any of the major car rental companies at BWI would rent a small car to a 21 year old for at worst a $20/day or so age surcharge.

Did it used to be 25 or something?  I have it in my head that "turning 25 and being able to rent a car" was like the last adult hurdle after 21.

In the US, the minimum age to rent a small car (generally with surcharge) has generally been 21, and 18 in some states like New York, for at least a couple of decades. There are further exceptions for military and business travel. Outside the US and at some licensee-owned locations, YMMV. I think you also have to be 25 to book through Priceline and some other discount channels.

JetBlue lives on! (And Alaska isn't that bad)

And yeah, f&*k United too. I mean, Spirit's the worst, but f&*k United too.

When I first saw the thread title, I thought the girl was hearing voices (aka, a spirit) in her head at the airport that made her flush the poor hamster down a toilet.

What's so bad about Southwest? I've flown many times with them and had no problem.

Indeed, they actually feed you and let you check bags free, and go to airports that aren't crowded hellholes [Hobby over Bush/Oakland over SF/Love over Ft Worth/Midway over O'Hare/etc.].

I'd consider them second best based on these traits alone.

Unlike many of the others, I didn't think "Spirit" was anything but the airline, since Spirit is just that bad.  Friends never let friends fly Spirit.

I thought everybody loved Southwest.

Southwest is deeply polarizing, a fact that confuses me as a Southwest devotee.  For some reason people are obsessed with the idea of assigned seats, and I really don't understand why.

I quite like Southwest, but whenever I look at flight prices, Southwest is always the most expensive, even more so than the big 3. So it makes me mad that Spirit ends up being the only budget option to choose from.
