Take this one as you will.

As for me, I'm going with the one I know best, even if it's been a whipping boy for fires. I've only been to two of them, and the one in Illinois is a suburban heck hole in comparison to one in California.

Oregon's seems nice, if a little too Republican and too similar to Modoc on the other side

Using similar logic to the OP, I'm voting the one I'm most familiar with: Lake, IL.

Illinois, followed by Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, respectively.

Probably has the best duck and goose hunting of any county in the state.

Lake County, OR.

Poor and out in the middle of nowhere, but it's one of my favorite places in the state.

Lake, MT is missing from the list (and that assumes you aren't counting counties with Lake in the name like Green Lake, WI).

I've been to 8 out of 12, so I can't comment on Lake in CA, MI, OR or SD.

I've only traveled through Lake in OH (many times on I-90 through the Cleveland metro), and TN (I took a 15 minute detour last month off of I-155 just to say I went there), so I haven't seen enough to want to relocate.

I've visited Lake in CO (Leadville is well worth spending a day in), FL (I've gone to the Citrus Tower when in Orlando), IN (Three Floyds in Munster is a classic craft brewer), and MT (a beautiful area just south of Glacier NP).

I've slept in Lake in IL (I chaperoned my kids' classes at Camp Duncan near Volo), and MN (when I was young I camped a couple of times in Gooseberry Falls SP).

I'll look at this as a retirement situation for me, so I'll skip the Chicagoland options since I live here already. I think a summer home overlooking Superior in Lake MN and a winter home on one of the many lakes in Lake FL sounds like the best answer to me.
