I hate to be defending Trump here, but as of dictator/fascist comparisons, many countries with stable democracy have such parades. We can argue it's an unnecessary innovation for America, but let's not get silly.

But they are on predictable dates, such as the date of independence, liberation from fascist or Communist regimes, or some revolution.

At least he was going to liberate about as many people from slavery as would Lincoln.

Yes, yes.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Orange Slug orders a huge bust of himself for this new planned grand parade of his (not for the military or vets).
I just hope they include an orange-colored clown wig for his sculpture.

I don't get how a parade in NYC in 1942 meant to raise war bonds for an actual war is in any way the same as president micro dick holding an ego boosting military parade in D.C.

There is no comparison.
It's just that the Deplorables in our society get feed images like this on their Breitbart and other trashy websites, they read the posts under the image that feeds giant hard-ons for all involved, then they think they can post it here, and get the same (MAGA cult, "eye-opening") reaction.
Typical bird-brain mentality.
It's like copy and pasting something from the Sesame Street website, and then transferring it to a webpage devoted to discussion on Astrophysics.

Love that last sentence! So true!

I posted this elsewhere (Political Wire):

Let us remember that November 11, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the second-most destructive war ever and the war that made possible the horrors of Bolshevism, Nazism, and sundry other novel forms of brutal tyranny that made the most destructive war in history and genocidal slaughters a near inevitability.

World War I was the worst possible war at the time, and a calamity whose horror nobody predicted at its start. It is hard to imagine a war that so universally scarred the surviving soldiers. Nobody fully understands why it came to be, but the militarization of so many cultures surely contributed to the horror of the war. Monarchs and presidents were proud of their well-drilled infantry units and of their battleships, and of the rapid development of armament industries nd related big business (including steel and chemicals).

As demonstrated in the next war, World War I gave at best temporary and superficial solutions to the failings of the pre-war world. It weakened the best of men and empowered the worst. Donald Trump, who seems to have little studied history of any kind, attaches himself as much as possible to military pomp and regimentation -- just like the Emperors of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, all of whose political systems disintegrated at or near the ends of the war. A militaristic culture is spoiling for a fight, and those spoiling for a fight usually get one. It is the same with kings in palaces as it is with angry drunks in seedy saloons.

The least appropriate treatment for the 100th anniversary of the end of what had been called the Great War and the War to End All Wars ("to end all" meaning a superlative in the day) is a display of military prowess. More apt would be contemplation of the stupidity of a militarized culture that easily drifts into pointless war over some affront. Prayer and fasting would be far more apt.

Come to think of it, I can see how the armed services can carry out their dubious directive while preventing it from being a Red Square spectacle stroking Trump's vanity: a somber, steady, procession of representatives of all branches of our military (including coast guard), dressed in their respective parade dress and the flags of their divisions. No "Mission Accomplished!" banners, no (disabled?) Pershing missiles, no tanks or Bradley all-terrain vehicles, no rockets or air shows .. certainly no "Ministry of Funny Walks". We can honor our service members and do our nation justice without vulgarity.

Informal (unscientific) poll by Military Times: 89% of its readers against parade.

That's President Donald Trump dancing on the wing of the plane in the military parade.

Funny video.
Critics slam "Cadet Bone Spur" for ordering a military parade. CNN's Jeanne Moos reports on the panning of the parade.

people are fine with constantly expanding the police powers of the executive, but get nervous about dictatorship at the mention of a parade.

The heart of the article is this:

But my comment  without partisanship: this is a request from the president that the chief of staff and the secretary of defense should politely but firmly refuse. Presidents honor armed service members and veterans, not military hardware. That goes for air shows and the like as well.

As if our society isn't militarized enough or wastes outrageous amounts of public money on military and "defense" already. The police act and present themselves like an occupying force, riot police are armed with military weaponry, weapons of war are glamorized and glorified throughout our culture, and all the while we proclaim an inability or unwillingness to aid one another because money for war is good, but money for food, clothing, housing, healthcare, and so on is a line too far.

A society that behaves and thinks this way is sick and has its priorities seriously messed up. Trump wants only to glorify himself and "intimidate" the world because he's incapable of making deals or persuading anyone to listen to him since everyone knows he's a fool (albeit a dangerous one). And his supporters are so sociopathic, faux macho, and blindly loyal that they'll fall all over themselves to justify something that lacks any substantive purpose.

LOL at him using the military as a means to feed the massive insecurities he developed due to a father who never loved him. It will be even more pathetic after his party gets a lashing the Tuesday before. Tongue

This is much more acceptable than the nonsense of doing a Bastille Day with tanks and fighters and missiles. Having a parade of vets on Veterans Day, in their honor, is not a terrible idea on the merits.

Of course Trump will find a way to make it all about him rather than the veterans.

It's like somebody read the post I wrote back in February about making the center of the parade the armed services and not Trump. We can always flatter ourselves.

If the purpose is to intimidate a weaker enemy into not doing something stupid, we have better ways to do that than with a parade.

I'm all for MAGA - Make America Great Again.  What Trump does not seem to get is that it is more important that America remain a GOOD nation and celebrate THAT above all.

He doesn't get that at all, FB, and that's his fundamental problem as president and a human being. In everything and every manner in every shape and every form on every decision in every day, it. Is. All. About. The. Donald. Even by the standards of other presidents who have to be raging egomaniacs to some degree to try leading the greatest country on Earth, he is in a class of his own compared to the other 44 combined.

Collude with a foreign government to make me president? It benefits me, so do it. Pass a tax bill? Would make me, my family, and my Mar-A-Lago Social Circle more money?! Does a journalist or politician criticize me for something? They're the worst! Absolutely sad! A failure!! Do they then change their tune and praise me? They're good people. Longtime friend!

We haven't had someone this mentally deranged is President since the Watergate days.
