I somewhat inclined to laugh about how seemingly every discussion regarding Hawaiian Democrats descends into a battle over who dropped their homophobic views first and when, etc. What an utterly bizarre state party.

As an aside: Not to downplay just how harmful anti-LGBT views are (Many post-2015) have clearly taken for granted the struggles required to achieve the advances we've made in the field, but surely being a literal private prison lobbyist is astronomically worse than voting nay on a piece of legislation pertaining to gay marriage? That's basically the single most morally depraved profession sanctioned by law I can think of - Somehow I'd even prefer a literal ICE agent as a Representative for my party.

(This post isn't directed at anyone in this thread in particular, FWIW)

I hate all the candidates in this race and would vote write-in, FTR.  I just felt Jeppe’s post was very misleading.

Ing seems way too my left actually. Guaranteed basic income shouldn't be our highest priority, and abolishing the ICE is downright reckless. As I posted elsewhere, I'm not a fan of the Atlas obsession with his appearance. With said, Ing seems the best candidate in the race.

Also Fukumoto was born in 1983. A "sane GOP" hasn't existed in her lifetime, much less the time she held office. She was a Republican elected official during the same time span Ted Cruz was.

It does feel a lot like that though, there's no other real option for a genuine progressive. The next best is probably Fukumoto and she's only been a Democrat for 5 minutes.

I feel the same way as you guys. Ing may have broken a law or two, but compared to the opportunist, the anti-gay bigot, and the blue-dog, the other anti-gay bigot, its just too much. Ing would make a great Representative for Hawaii, unlike the others.

Also, Im pretty sure Ing is going to win the primary in the first place. Maybe Fukimoto, but Ing has the socialist crowd and Sanders people. Also, the OC endorsement really helps him.

Also Also, I just dont trust Fukimoto. Sure, she was rather Liberal, but if she really was a progressive, she would have switched over to the Ds years before. Her district is D leaning, so there would be no push back, and the Hawaii Republican Party is practically nonexistent. She probably is a reverse Gillibrand, pretending to be "progressive" so she can win, and then do whatever she wants and have no threat of losing. It worked for Gabbard(hoping she is taken down via primary), so it can work for her.

If there was another standard mainstream progressive running, like Schatz or even in the mold of Hanabusa, I'd probably support them over Ing due to his issues...but all the other candidates are total garbage, so not an option.
