This whole race is terrible, and I want none of them to win. Fukimoto is an opportunist, Ing has his embezzlement problems and the rest are iffy or Blue Dogs. Why does the senate get such legends Brian Schatz while the house is stuck with these bozos.

Because it's the House. Veep had a great joke where Selina Meyer wanted support for some bill and after she had talked to Senators, she said something like "anyways, let's open the sewer cover to the House."

Anyways, Kaniela Ing looks hot in his mugshot, so I endorse him.

I guess he is pretty good looking and young, hes also on my end of the spectrum. I guess he gets my endorsement, but its a halfhearted one.

I guess, with all his criminal baggage and not appearing to court, it makes him seem like he lacks personal integrity. Obviously doing something illegal doesn't damn you as a human being, as we all deserve forgiveness for past crimes, but he did some really unethical stuff. And I wouldn't be surprised if he was only partially committed to leftist ideals too, which makes him just as bad as Fukumoto.

I'm this close to changing my avatar to green. I swear. The fact that dems are rooting for moderate to conservative democrats to win a D+17 seat is ridiculous

Peak Atlas (noun): thinking about changing your party affiliation because of a primary for a single congressional seat in Hawaii.

I laughed out loud at this. The accuracy.

Ing did nothing wrong - it's called hustling. Makes me like him more.

If Ing is a dud, I'm going to root for Case because he'll be the likeliest to be immediately ousted in 2020.

The candidates had a primary debate yesterday.

From the twitter chatter-

Chin came out the most convincing.

Fukumoto did a good job brushing off questions of her Republican past.

Mercado Kim's anti-gay past was brought up.

Fukumoto and Ing sparred, Case and Mercado Kim sparred.

The only one in the race is like Alan Grayson 2.0, but with more mugshots.

The issue with Alan Grayson is that he's a domestic abuser, not his ideology. (Which is very good, in contrast to Kaniela Ing's, which is, of course, perfect)

He also committed financial fraud, running a hedge fend on the Cayman Isles. I guess Ing’s crime was significantly less complicated, he just embezzled the government out of money.

Given how audacious Ing’s actions were, I’m surprised he didn’t get more than a huge fine. He got dangerously close to jail time territory, but I guess Hawaii has lax corruption laws for obvious reasons.

Better to have good Senators IMO. I too could do without any of the four in this race

The largest union in the state, the state government employee’s union, endorsed Donna Mercado Kim. She probably wins, but hopefully there’ll be at least one more public poll of the race.

With American unions being so reactionary, it almost makes you wonder if the right's repeated attempts to quash them are really worth the effort. Almost.

Ed Case and Doug Chin are worse tbh. Case is even more conservative than DMK (who is a fairly generic moderate Dem outside of her opposition to gay marriage several years ago) & Chin has shady connections to the private prison industry.

Chin is owned by the private prison industry & he's been an advocate for gay conversion therapy in the past, which is worse than voting against gay marriage, tbh. He's a whacky evangelical Christian whose views are more in line with the anti-gay, anti-choice views of the Republican party, while DMK is at least a supporter of abortion rights.

He made one anti-gay speech in the 90s.  The other stuff you’re saying about his views on social issues is flat-out not true.

So at this point it looks like Fukumoto is the best (least atrocious) candidate. Funny because her voter regustration card said “Republican” just two years ago.

Are Sens. Schatz and Hirono going to endorse?

I love how much ink has been spilled in this thread arguing the demerits of four candidates who range from mediocre to abysmal

He’s the lead pastor at a church that held a “pray the gay away” conference in 2016.

I somewhat inclined to laugh about how seemingly every discussion regarding Hawaiian Democrats descends into a battle over who dropped their homophobic views first and when, etc. What an utterly bizarre state party.

As an aside: Not to downplay just how harmful anti-LGBT views are (Many post-2015) have clearly taken for granted the struggles required to achieve the advances we've made in the field, but surely being a literal private prison lobbyist is astronomically worse than voting nay on a piece of legislation pertaining to gay marriage? That's basically the single most morally depraved profession sanctioned by law I can think of - Somehow I'd even prefer a literal ICE agent as a Representative for my party.

(This post isn't directed at anyone in this thread in particular, FWIW)

I agree, actually. In any case, what is up with Hawaii politics? Why is everyone a homophobe or a secret homophobe, ranging from Gabbard to (likely) the second congressman of this state? At this point I'd probably support Fukumoto or Ing and hope that they get primaried by someone sane in 2020.
