As is often the case in the countries where it could be, quite a striking difference between repopulated ethnically-cleansed regions and the rest of the country.

Although it is interesting that in the Czech Republic, such areas are strongest for what at this stage we can call the populist right, whereas the opposite is true in Poland. My understanding is that a lot of what was once the Sudetenland is very post-industrial, which I suppose would go some way to explaining it.

That's really interesting, yeah. Isn't Silesia also a heavily postindustrial region?

Yeah, I think that’s right. From a cursory glance at some maps, it seems stronger for PiS, at least outside of the major cities, than the other ex-German areas, though by no means that strong compared to much of the east of the country.

The difference isn't the economic history of the regions in question, but the parties concerned: right from the very beginning PiS has appealed to the idea of wiping out as many traces of the Communist period as possible and creating instead a 'real' and 'organic' Poland, rooted in Catholicism and some form of re-imagined traditional social order. Babiš is a former Communist and represents something quite different. 'Populism' in this sense is a euphemistic label for a particular style of politics rather than a euphemistic label for a particular political ideology.

I assume Pavel is the lesser evil here? I stopped paying attention to Czech politics for a while.

Pavel supports gay marriage and EU membership. Babis is a literal Trump stan. Hardly.

went down a weird bit of a rabbit hole today about hockey players getting political (upon thinking of Ovechkin's pretty open support of Putin) and found that apparently Dominik Hasek said back in 2020 he'll be running for President in 2028, though obviously things can change. As a Buffalo fan, it certainly would be interesting to see that. If he wins I hope the news plays the Rick Jeanneret "we are not worthy!" line lol

Not sure of his politics other than calling Ovechkin a chickensh*t after Crimea and more recently calling for all Russian players to be kicked out of the NHL unless they disavow the invasion of Ukraine.

Edit: he is apparently heavily considering running for senate next year after being approached by TOP 09 https://english.radio.cz/legendary-goalie-dominik-hasek-considering-running-senate-8790522

Yeah I think I might have been thinking of someone else’s statements about it then.

"Czech opposition [so Babis] fights postal voting plan with Trump-like rhetoric"

"“The explanation [for wanting postal voting] is simple. To hold on to power and public office, in an attempt to manipulate the electoral system in favor of the ruling parties,” Babiš said in a speech to the lower house of parliament last week.

The government wants to allow Czechs living abroad to vote by post, starting from the 2025 parliamentary election. At present, voting from abroad requires a trip to an embassy (for all elections except European Parliament and Senate ballots, for which Czechs have to head home). But the planned new rules would change that, affecting some 400,000 to 600,000 Czechs living abroad (although experts POLITICO spoke to said the number of potential voters using the new system would likely be no more than 100,000). In the last parliamentary election, in 2021, around 13,000 people abroad voted.

“The proposal in its current form is incredibly complicated … lots of people will think twice before they actually go through with it,” political scientist Lubomír Kopeček told POLITICO.

The lower chamber of parliament, in which the government coalition has a majority, approved the legislation in a first reading on Thursday."

Babis should be calling for a smaller threshold for parliamentary representation instead. He might be prime minister today if the last elections had a smaller one as so many votes were wasted that went to parties that would not be supportive of current govt.

This week, Czech parliament voted against the introduction of same-sex marriage but in favor of expanding rights for same-sex couples within civil unions, granting them almost the exact same rights as married couples except for adoption rights.

On same-sex marriage, a majority of ANO and a plurality of ODS MPs abstained. Most KDU-CSL and SPD MPs voted against. Most Pirate, STAN and TOP 09 MPs voted in favor. But with only 66 votes in favor out of 200 total MPs and abstention practically being a vote against, a majority for same-sex marriage was not reached.

Interesting how Greek society is much more religious and opposition to same-sex marriage in society is more widespread but it was adopted there this month, whereas Czechia is quite irreligious and same-sex marriage enjoys more support in society, but evidently not in parliament. A large part of the explanation is probably the fact that Babis and Fiala aren't interested in the type of EU job Mitsotakis aims for...
