Polls are now closed and counting is under way.

When do we start to get the results?

When do we start to get the results?

Very shortly, in the next 10-15 minutes. The first results come from rural areas, more pro-Babis.

Is there a site that is unquestionably the best at reporting? Similar to Globo in Brasil?

I'm following the CT24 results page. It had good graphics and maps in the 1st round.

This is over, Pavel wins by a wide margin. Pavel leads with rural areas already at almost 20% reporting. Basically nothing is in from Prague.

CNN/Prima news is projecting a Pavel win, by the way.

Also can the US hire the people who run the Czech elections? These make the Brazilians and the Floridians look slow.

I assume Pavel is the lesser evil here? I stopped paying attention to Czech politics for a while.

Certainly against Babiš, from what little I know.

Anybody please correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Czech public opinion shifted in strongly favor of EU and NATO unity due to the historical memory of 1968 still being strong in the country. Pavel being a former NATO general probably gave him a boost in otherwise conservative Eurosceptic rural areas. Opinion polls still show Czechia adopting of the Euro as very unpopular, though.

Very good to see Eastern Europe continue to be a bulwark against Russian imperialism (except for f**king Hungary of course). Hopefully the Slovak elections later this year will further consolidate that.

As is often the case in the countries where it could be, quite a striking difference between repopulated ethnically-cleansed regions and the rest of the country.

That was a powerful win by Pavel.

+1 for NATO and the West.

Although it is interesting that in the Czech Republic, such areas are strongest for what at this stage we can call the populist right, whereas the opposite is true in Poland. My understanding is that a lot of what was once the Sudetenland is very post-industrial, which I suppose would go some way to explaining it.

During Pavel's victory speech, he announced that the President of Slovakia, Zuzana Čaputová, was on stage and asked her to say a few words:

Quote
There are no two nations in the world that are as close as Czechs and Slovaks," said Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová, who visited the staff of newly elected President Petr Pavel.

That's really interesting, yeah. Isn't Silesia also a heavily postindustrial region?

I think Pavel is no evil at all.

He has all the qualities to be a good President for the Czech, the West and NATO.

Did you notice that Babis did well in the Crystal Meth areas near Germany's Saxony and in the industrial areas close to Poland?
