County Equivalent Maps:
1972:
I might note that the North Slope Borough would have been amongst McGovern’s best county-equivalents – if he got over sixty percent it would be rivalled only by: | County Equivalent | McGovern | % | Nixon | % | Others | % | Margin | % | #1 | Duval County, Texas | 3,729 | 85.68% | 623 | 14.32% | 0 | 0.00% | 4,352 | 71.37% | #2 | Shannon County, South Dakota | 1,246 | 77.34% | 356 | 22.10% | 9 | 0.56% | 1,611 | 55.25% | #3 | Greene County, Alabama | 3,235 | 68.32% | 1,404 | 29.65% | 96 | 2.03% | 4,735 | 38.67% | #4 | Charles City County, Virginia | 1,177 | 67.84% | 535 | 30.84% | 23 | 1.33% | 1,735 | 37.00% | #5 | New York (Manhattan) County, New York | 354,326 | 66.25% | 178,515 | 33.38% | 2,022 | 0.38% | 534,863 | 32.87% | #6 | Suffolk County, Massachusetts | 166,250 | 65.76% | 85,272 | 33.73% | 1,299 | 0.51% | 252,821 | 32.03% | #7 | Elliott County, Kentucky | 1,499 | 65.26% | 782 | 34.04% | 16 | 0.70% | 2,297 | 31.21% | #8 | Knott County, Kentucky | 2,774 | 64.71% | 1,479 | 34.50% | 34 | 0.79% | 4,287 | 30.21% | #9 | Macon County, Alabama | 3,636 | 62.21% | 1,931 | 33.04% | 278 | 4.76% | 5,845 | 29.17% | #10 | Menominee County, Wisconsin | 608 | 62.30% | 355 | 36.37% | 13 | 1.33% | 976 | 25.92% | #11 | Saint Louis City, Missouri | 119,817 | 62.33% | 72,402 | 37.67% | | | 192,219 | 24.67% | #12 | Deer Lodge County, Montana | 3,979 | 60.25% | 2,373 | 35.93% | 252 | 3.82% | 6,604 | 24.32% |
Checking the figures, North Slope would have been McGovern’s eleventh-strongest county-equivalent by margin – given its majority-minority status, not remarkable of course as six of then ten above it and the District of Columbia are also majority-minority. Looking at the results table, Wade-Hampton’s shift from McGovern to Ford was replicated in the Lower 48 only by: - Pitkin County, Colorado
- Washtenaw County, Michigan
- Clay County, South Dakota
