Share with us in which cities you'd want to live of those listed and, if you want, arrange them in order of preference.

New Orleans and Atlanta would be at the top of my list. Richmond is also great and Austin, TX is nice too.

Asheville first and foremost

Then the other cities in North Carolina
Then Greenville, SC
Then San Antonio, TX
Then Austin
Then Houston
Then Charleston, SC

As for places not included: Lynchburg, VA ; Charlottesville, VA ; Knoxville, TN ; Waco, TX ; Richmond, VA ; Williamsburg, VA ; Fredericksburg, VA ; Ocala, FL

...Where are those?

You left of Miami, which is the only Southern city I'd really want to live in. However, I would consider:

1. Houston
2. Austin
3. Atlanta (also not included)
4. Charlotte
5. Dallas
6. Tampa
7. Virginia Beach
8. Asheville
9. Charleston

1. San Antonio (I have family there)
2. Austin (my mom is there, but is planning to move to Tennessee or North Carolina within the next few weeks; however, it seems to have a nice culture and is close to SA)
3. Houston (Have more distant family there)
4. Dallas (How bout them Cowboys?)
5. Charlotte
6. Raleigh

Denton

What's wrong with Denton?

I guess I was being dismissive of Denton being on the list at all as I think of it as being part of the Metroplex and nothing more than a sprawly bedroom community with a commuter college. (If Denton on the list, why not Arlington or Garland?)  To be fair, I haven't been in Denton for about 25 years when I went to TCU and had a friend who dated a TWU girl, maybe it's less forgettable now.

For what I value in a city to live (and I mean living in the city not some metro).  I live in New Orleans, in an old house, surrounded by history, food, good booze, music, culture.  Denton really doesn't exactly check any of those boxes and it isn't exactly scenic either.  I'm sure Denton is clean, safe and loves it's momma and there's nothing wrong with that. When my parents moved me to New Orleans we didn't live in New Orleans, we lived in sprawly suburb on the Northshore, Slidell to be exact.  Nothing wrong with it, you still got exposed to New Orleans and all it had to offer, but it's not somewhere I'd live now.

I don't exactly agree with your criteria for a good city, but at least you have reasons. Wink

Birmingham is a hell hole.

You have obviously never spent any time in Southside, Avondale, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Crestline, Highland Park, etc.
