Don't know much about the state, nor its voting patterns, but I have heard that Gary, Indiana, was over 90% for Kerry.

Generally we go a little more in-depth into election trends and voting patterns than who will win in 2008...

Thank you for rephrasing your post while completely ignoring what I just said.  Tongue

One interesting thing is the Dems' having won Indianapolis.  It's not really economically depressed, and it's 68% white.  Why do they do so well there?

One of the most dangerous cities in the country. Ranked #5

Clinton would have won it in '92 except the media called it for Bush before the polls in the Central Time Zone had closed.

The city is 84% black, as well as being in Chicagoland.

The strange thing about Indiana is the way it sticks out like a sore thumb a lot of the time.  Just look at the 1992 and 1996 national election maps for instance.

One other funny thing I noticed is that Dick Lugar, the invincible incumbent, failed to unseat former Senator Birch Bayh in 1974, and yet the well-meaning idiot Dan Quayle succeeded in doing the same in 1980.

hmm, top cities w/ highest crime rates are all Democratic, strongly...

Yeah, Indiana's goin' GOP.  Even with Bayh, they might still be a Republican voting, (although less than 55% in this case)

Given that turnout in Indiana was basically as high as it was in all of the neighboring states that Clinton won, I'm not sure how you figure that.

Nah, Republicans from the surrounding towns converge on Democrat cities in large mobs and string up everybody they can find. Being Democrat causes being murdered. Wink

I've heard that Birch Bayh was a liberal icon.  How did he get elected in Indiana so many times?  This is a very conservative state.  Or was Indiana a much more liberal state back in the day?

Indiana isn't so unusual. If you subtract Chicagoland from IL, and the three Chicagoland lake counties from IN there are a lot of similarities. The resemblance is even more striking if you subtract the Mississippi River counties from IL. Both are then solidly GOP with a Dem university county and pockets of urban Democrats in isolated communities. Both have a decidedly southern flavor towards the Ohio river.

The same thing can be said comparing western 2/3 of OH to IN dropping all counties bordering the Great Lakes. The capitals, isolated cities and university areas represent the islands of Democrats. Both have a southern feel along the Ohio River as with IL.

HamRadio, see the post on the previous page...also, back in the good old days Democrats could be elected pretty much everywhere, because they were the dominating party.

Not sure but when talking about 1964, Clinton in My Life talks of Indiana as a conservative state represented by two liberal Democratic senators

I don't think Birch ever won as his Senate races (1962; 1968; 1974) by Evan-style margins, though I could be mistaken
