True part of what he said: Some of these countries are sh*tholes. We should be cautious about taking poor, uneducated immigrants from these countries.

Problematic part: Calling entire countries sh*tholes, rejecting all immigrants from them. Offering an example of a white country (Norway) in contrast to black countries (Haiti and Africa).

Is it racist? Well, he's essentially arguing against the diversity visa lottery program because it takes in poor, third-world immigrants. That's sort of racist, but it depends on whether he has non-economic concerns about these people.

Also, it's very hypocritical and ignorant of people to criticize the US taking poor, uneducated immigrants. The entire 19th century of the US was a history of the US taking poor, uneducated immigrants from all over Europe, Asia, and Africa (mostly Europe at the time). People disliked it then, but then a couple decades went by and those poor immigrants became middle class and assimilated, and then those people took their turn to criticize the new arrivals. Frankly this country should take immigrant from "sh*thole" countries, but let's be smart and honest about it.

Our esteemed president wants to know why he should accept immigrants from "sh--hole" countries and not people from places like Norway.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/11/us/politics/trump-sh**thole-countries.html

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Thursday balked at an immigration deal that would include protections for people from Haiti and African countries, demanding to know at a White House meeting why he should accept immigrants from “sh**thole countries” rather than people from places like Norway, according to people with direct knowledge of the conversation.

Mr. Trump’s remarks left members of Congress attending the meeting in the Cabinet Room alarmed and mystified. They were there discussing an emerging bipartisan deal to give legal status to immigrants illegally brought to the United States as children, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity without authorization to discuss the explosive proceedings of the private meeting.

When Mr. Trump heard that Haitians were among those who would benefit, he asked if they could be left out of the plan, according to the people familiar with the conversation, asking, “Why do we want people from Haiti here?”

The comments were reminiscent of ones the president made last year in an Oval Office meeting with Cabinet officials and administration aides, where he complained about admitting Haitians to the country, complaining that they all had AIDS, as well as Nigerians, who he said would never go back to their “huts,” according to officials who heard the statements in person or were briefed on the remarks by people who did. The White House vehemently denied last month that Mr. Trump made those remarks.

In a written statement on Thursday, Raj Shah, the White House deputy press secretary, did not deny the account or directly address Mr. Trump’s comments during the meeting.

Now you see why immigration's an important issue to progressives these days?

Anti-immigration is simply a cover for racism and xenophobia. And Trump removed any and all excuses.

He only wants people from the best countries to come!

Is it possible that Trump is/was so obsessed with Obama's presidency, his birth certificate and so on, because Obama's father also came from one of these sh**thole countries, instead of a "good" country like Norway?

At the very least Trump seems to exhibit an ignorant and warped form of snobism/elitism which he applies to entire countries.

That said, I am surprised that he was so explicitly racist in that statement. Even his infamous Charlottesville responses have been "Both sides were bad," not "I want less protesting from sh*t people." This is basically him saying the n-word at this point.

Though maybe Trump, being the cuckoolander that he is, even realizes the magnitude of his statement.

I totally agree, and that attribute is often associated with being carelessly racist, especially with rich people.

People who were outraged by "deplorables" are rushing to say that calling Haiti and African countries "sh**tholes" is totally not racist or anything

Yeah. Labeling a portion of the people who support a mad, bigoted, wanna-be war criminal as 'deplorable' is totally the same as obscene racist potshots taken at entire nations. At least, to Kim Jong Trump's cultists, it is.

I think Trump made it pretty clear that only whites are welcome to the US of A.
How long till he advocates the reinstatement of Jim Crow?

You honestly think Trump would have some huge qualm with a Japanese lawyer or Brazilian doctor coming to the United States?

Yes, I really do.  Maybe not a Japanese one, but certainly a Brazilian doctor or lawyer.  So would the majority of Republicans, for that matter.

He and the Republicans would only tolerate the Japanese guy as long as he remains one of the "good" minorities. But if at any point he gets uptity...

If Trump had used the term "failed states", would he be wrong?

These countries are awful places with folks unable to be self sufficient. The people there have tragic plights, but it is not the responsibility of the USA to mitigate this with mass immigration.  And if we choose to help them in their own countries, I don't want to hear about "Yankee Imperialism"

It's not the responsibility of the USA, but it's the responsibility of all major countries on Earth to prove some sort of relief everytime a humanitarian crisis arises.

For all the blue avatars or anybody else on here trying to defend this comment. The problem with the statement isn't that he called the countries s**tholes. We all agree that these country are lesser developed than the US and have several problems. The problem is that he said he rather have immigrants from Norway. Anybody who thinks that he chose Norway because it just happens to be a more developed country is lying to themselves. He know what he was doing, he meant to be sly, he meant it to be racist, and anybody on here who denies it or try to take it out of context is just as bad as him.

Maybe but could it be that Norway also has a low corruption rating, developed economy, highly skilled workers, and citizens that are bilingual and frequently speak English? Just a thought. Immigration is more than just skin color.
