Mine:

The darker, the more (un)favorable. Green: net positive; red: net negative; gray: pretty neutral

New Jersey seems like a crowded cesspool of rude people that has nothing to offer on its own (its head is NYC and its ass is Philly), and literally every bizarre news story ever comes out of Florida, a state with no cohesive culture throughout it that's stocked with old people who can't drive. As you can tell, I'm not a big fan of the south. I've always had a fascination with certain southern states though. Alabama specifically. I also like West Virginia and Kansas, but I wouldn't consider them south.

I would love to live in New England or the Pacific Northwest, but I would settle for the Midwest.

I saw a meme - Yes a meme! - the other day that accurately portrayed my feelings.

Me, in New Jersey: I hate this crowded surburbia with nothing to do
Me, outside New Jersey: What did you just say about New Jersey! Jersey's the greatest place in the world! We got X, Y, and Z!

And while that is probably a lot of people's feelings about their home - retreating into defense mode when someone else attacks it - I think it rings particularly accurate. A lot of New Jersey is quite boring, especially if you lead the same kind of life as me, but then again, 90% of this country would be worse. I have tried to recalibrate my mind so that the first thing that comes to mind is Nassau Street in Princeton, and it really is something quite wonderful. All along the Delaware River in the center, there are old-fashioned town stores. And of course, there is a true little town feel at the north of the "Shore". Those are the real charm of the state. Much of the south away from the Shore is just like small-town America with local parades and all that charming American pride.

While most of the shore is accurately described as bad, I think Ocean City is an amazing place for the beach, Asbury Park for music of course!, and as a long-time gambler, Atlantic City and Monmouth though those would be enhanced with sports gambling.

Most of the actually urban places are basically disasters, but I don't really see what's so bad about Trenton at the end of the day; New Brunswick has incredibly specific types of post-punk pop music or something like that; and Hoboken and Jersey City are superior versions to Manhattan living.

There are actually a lot of things that I could go on about to the groans of - "oh, that's only second best in America. If you want the real thing, go to X", but I think Jersey despite its bad and boring and tacky parts, really has some of the best of everything. Anyone who comments on the people has probably not been there. It's obviously not overwhelmingly friendly like the Midwest, but I've never seen anything as outright mean and brutal as what I've seen in brief California stays.

While it's not a great fit for me, it's clearly among the best despite Atlas' (and America's!) horrible perceptions.

Below for me. Primary areas of "like" are the Great Lakes and the northeast. Primary area of "dislike" is the Great Plains and the western portion of the deep south. I am lukewarm on the west coast, rockies, and southeast.

At the moment, I'd say probably something like that, but as I age, the gap between the top and bottom narrows as I perceive more redeeming and diminishing features all over the place.

Whatever did the Great State of Ohio do to you? Angry

I wasn't aware even you liked it! I probably like Cincinnati, but that's probably not the case you are looking to make. I don't see much of anything particularly redeeming about it except some ancestral ethnic settlements that are sure to die our like the rest of the Rust Belt. Do you have any positives to share?

That's fair, but I think Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe alone are enough to redeem Florida, and New Jersey, while bland, has it's nice spots--Jersey City/Hoboken is great and there are definitely some scenic spots. Besides, the existence of EWR means I will never, ever go to JFK or LGA, and that alone makes it a FF state.

There are things to like about every state.  Now, that's not necessarily me saying that I would be willing to live in every state, but there are certainly reasons to go to any state and things to like about all of them- and there are plenty of good people anywhere you go.  I would probably even expand this to say every congressional district.

I take it you’re not a fan of Barry Goldwater.
