Standard Dem hack map. Exceptions: the nice scenery of some of the Mountain West states cancels out their horrible politics. The awesomeness of New Orleans narrowly pushes Louisiana into FF territory. And even though Virginia is a beautiful blue state now, it's still pretty boring and too culturally Southern in many parts.

Red = positive
Blue = negative

The darker the red, the more positive, same with blue and negative. The lighter ones have a chance of maybe flipping.

Right! Honestly, I have no idea why New Jersey (and Florida) are so popular to hate.

At the moment, I'd say probably something like that, but as I age, the gap between the top and bottom narrows as I perceive more redeeming and diminishing features all over the place.

I think a lot of the reason the Midwest doesn't score too highly on my map is that it's really the part of the country I've been to the least and thus my opinion of states is based almost entirely on random news stories. States that I have more of a personal connection to scored higher.

Most people assume that Oklahoma is nothing but trailer park hicks and empty fields and while there's definitely no shortage of either, it's far from the entirety of the state. While I personally don't care for my state's politics in the slightest and would prefer living somewhere else, I do think Oklahoma gets a bad rap.

Green = positive
Red = negative

Alabama's favorability when they sent Doug Jones to the Senate, but its still very backwards sadly.

This is probably the most bi-partisan map here.

Silly exercise. Few states are monolithically good or bad. People excited about "California" may be speaking of places like the San Francisco Bay Area, the central coast, Santa Barbara, or San Diego while having mixed feelings about Greater Los Angeles. Except perhaps for Sacramento, the Central Valley is awful, and as for desert areas -- one might as well be in Arizona. Palm Springs might be fine if one has unlimited funds, but I would rather live in  Greater Phoenix than in any desert area of California. Illinois has a world-class city in Chicago, the Paris of the Midwest... and some of the dullest terrain that you could ever see, and the dreary area of depleting coal mines in the hilly far South. West Virginia, southern Missouri, northwestern Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma are pretty enough -- but I would not want to live with the demographics of poverty. New York City, Boston, and perhaps Philadelphia have everything that one could want except for a mild climate, but one needs a high income to appreciate them.  Detroit and St. Louis are cheap places to live, but living in either isn't really living.

Most Southern states have the economic structure in which one is typically either very rich or very poor. If you are in a family that lives on a big spread of land in Mississippi, then congratulations! You can live large and hire plenty of domestic servants who live off the toil of your farm laborers, and not very well. Your kids can go to private schools, but the people who work for you (except perhaps such professionals as accountants) live in gross poverty.

Politics? Nevada is close to being a liberal preserve, and Utah is downright reactionary -- but Utah does much better. Knowing that the entertainment and culture in Reno and Las Vegas centers on casinos and isn't child-friendly, and that public education in Nevada is dreadful, I wouldn't want to raise kids there. I'd want my kids to grow up to be something other than blackjack dealers or restaurant help. This said, if one likes the bawdy shows and the thrill of gambling, and has no use for opera, ballet, the symphony, or live theater, then Nevada might be right for you. Utah is reactionary, but at least Utah residents have fewer problems from the use of tobacco and alcohol. Salt Lake City is something  of a cultural oasis for its size, and the state has some of the finest recreational sites in America. One can live much like a Mormon without being a Mormon... OK, I have to drink just to deal with anxiety, but it is one beer (and definitely not a 'forty', or one glass of wine that dissolves anxiety more safely than a pill.

So what about my state? Michigan has some infamously-awful cities (Detroit, Flint, Saginaw)... Lansing is crappy.  But it also has some coastline best described as a poor man's coastal California. We have a waterfall (Tahquamenon) that rivals Niagara Falls without having the dreadful city of Niagara Falls, New York nearby. We have two of the finest state universities in the University of Michigan and Michigan State. Need a white-collar job that will allow you to use your mind and keep some individuality? Western Michigan University churns out huge numbers of school teachers. You don't get rich teaching, but material indulgence is grossly over-rated. If you are a rake, Michigan has casinos that rival those of Vegas... and there is Michigan Avenue on the southwest side of Detroit that is full of bars, liquor stores, venues of adult entertainment, and all the pushers and whores that you could possibly need (no thanks -- I would rather live in nearby Dearborn, where the large Arab and Muslim populations influence local politics enough to keep that bilge out of town. Southwestern Michigan is close enough to Chicago to make its rich cultural attractions within reach in a day trip. Bad as Detroit is, it has its cultural attractions. Much of America's African-American pop culture originated in greater Detroit.

...and think of all the lakes for boating and fishing, wooded trails for hiking, and excellent opportunities for hunting if one wants to turn "Bambi" into venison. Michigan also even has some wine country.

Now what is bad, something that nobody likes?

Lake-effect snow. Lakes Michigan and Superior are large enough to provide copious moisture, but not big enough to moderate the climate as does the Pacific Ocean in California. Michigan gets Rocky Mountain snow without having the ski slopes.  Thus in winter one gets the worst of both worlds. Many Michiganders winter in Florida.  As I say of a Michigan winter, one spells relief

"F-L-O-R-I-D-A".

You can tell someone from Michigan... he walks like a penguin in the winter.

Honestly nothing, but I used to be "friends" with a beautiful Native American woman who lived in Oklahoma and she was pretty awesome.

I have a bias towards Western states. They have some of the best scenery in the world. But, on the other hand, I have a strong bias against Trump states. My overall weighting balance results in the map above. I hope to update that map a year from now.
