My ratings are based on the balance of environmental, institutional, social/personal and political experiences in the states.  There are some states that I've had more experiences than others.  Blue=positive, red=negative, green=neutral/not enough basis for judgment, grey=haven't been to/no basis for judgment.

Green=positive
Red=negative

The darker the color, the greater the intensity (Dark green for the best states, dark red for the worst)

A lot of people don't like Idaho, even if they like the other mountain states.  Why is that?

The colors are on a scale of 10, with 10 (90% blue) being highest opinion and 1 (90% red) being lowest.

The only reasonable explanation is that they've never visited. Well, politics - but I don't get why someone would rate Utah positive but Idaho negative.

It may be more fair for me to have coloured Idaho green.  I was taken through the state by my parents on a road trip when I was very young, but they didn't drive through anywhere interesting and the stops were uneventful, so my impression was a poorly informed one.

Green = Positive
Red = Negative
Grey = Mixed Feelings

Oh and as for Idaho v. Utah, look at Rexburg...then look at Provo...there's your answer to that one.

I'd probably say all and all I have a positive opinion of all of them except for Vermont, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, California and Oregon.

apparently Rexburg is covered in snow all the time... when I was going to move there I would have had to buy snow tires for my car, something that literally no one has around here

Honestly, I don't hate any of the states (they all have some redeeming factors), but California is obviously the best and Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, etc. are the least best. Florida seems unduly hated, though the gulf states in general are strange and disconcerting and flat and swampy.

Blue = positive.
Green = neutral/not enough information.
Red = negative.

And yes, I lived in California for a few months, so I can say I know enough to form an opinion.

Blue = Positive
Red = Negative
Gray = Toss-up

Code:

I base my personal opinions off of places I've traveled, the likability of the people and I try to keep politics separate.

Areas like Minnesota for example, I like the idea of the rural people and great fishing locations. Nevada, I must admit, has become one of my favorite travel spots. I think Vegas is a blast.

Virginia seems very nasty. People seem less friendly. Something about the state leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Arizona and Colorado are similar.

I don't have a very negative opinion of any state, as there is so much diversity within each state.  However, I'll try to use the terms lightly:

Red = States I like

Blue = States I do not like

Pink = I like the states somewhat due to their cities, but not the entire state

Light Blue = I don't like the states overall, but their big cities are good.
