People, especially American people, don't think about the system that much. It was all about the narrative that New Dealer welfare- which those of us living in reality know to be very limited- only helped the very poor at the expense of the working man. The welfare queen fallacy. Nevermind those policies were limiting wealth inequality. Add in resentment against continuing integration efforts and a bad economy at the end of the Fifth Party System- actually the result of renewed competition from West Germany and Japan- and they fell for it. Trump in rhetoric stands against Reagan's neoliberal policies but ironically got supported for a lot of the same reasons.
