Yes, it is a sign that Irish have long assimilated.  I'm sure most are mixed but it's interesting to note that Irish is #1 and English still comes ahead of Italian in these establishmentarian NYC suburbs even though Italian is the most common NHW ancestry in the region.

Is it accurate to say that in the second half twentieth century Irish-Catholics, Jews and other 'ethnic whites' of the Northeast upper-class became essentially indistinguishable from WASPs? So while the narrow definition of WASP is now obsolete, WASP culture basically lives on with a dramatically expanded demographic base

I have a friend whose family pretty firmly fits the Yankee/WASP cultural world: Old-ish money, half of the family can be traced to colonial Virginia, Episcopalian, and lives in the old-money parts of Washington DC.

They do exist, but are a rare and dying breed.

Well, not "Yankee."

Interestingly, DC is the most Episcopalian metro according to Pew 2014.  Not surprising really - it lacks a sizeable white ethnic element and has a lot of "elites" with roots in both the north and the south.
