I, myself fit into this category of disliking him, however he has done two things I approve of:

-the partial-birth abortion ban
-the 2001 tax cuts

So if it wasn't for abortion you'd be more socially liberal than almost everyone on here, about as socially liberal as me, and less socially liberal than only bandit, texasgurl, and migrendel? That's just weird.

actually, about 60% of the stuff he does I approve of. It's the controvertial stuff that's the problem. When it's a divisive issue, I am very very rarely on his side.

My problem with Bush isn't so much what he has done as what he has not done.

For those of you who supported the partial birth abortion ban: What enumerated power was Congress using when passing the law? I personally wholly disapprove of the ban; there is, as far as I can tell, nothing in the Constitution allowing Congress to regulate abortions.

My most significant qualms with Bush are: (a) He has not cut federal spending at all (even when one does not take security-related spending into account), and (b) He seems to keen on federal interference in personal affairs (the Schiavo bill, partial birth abortions, etc.)

I do approve of many of his actions: free trade agreements, opposing affirmative action, and so forth.

If the Supreme Court can legislate on the matter, the US Congress can legislate on the matter. In a perfect world, Roe v. Wade would be recognized for the travesty of a court decision that it is and overturned. Instead, thirty years of lies and propaganda have convinced people that the repeal of Roe would entail the full illegalization of abortion. Meaning that Roe will continue to set a legal precedent on abortion. Until the Supreme Court starts reading the Constitution, abortion is fair game on the federal level.

The partial-birth abortion ban could at least fall under an unfairly broad interpretation of the commerce clause. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act doesn't even have that going for it.

Not necessarily. The judicial power of the Supreme Court is different from the legislative power of Congress. In some cases, the former is more broad; in others, the opposite is the case (assuming that you can even compare the two).

In any event, the Supreme Court's authority to rule on the constitutionality of abortion laws (or of any other laws, for that matter) arises from Article III, Sections 1 and 2. (That is not to say that the ruling is correct.) There is no similar enumerated power granted to Congress.

Well, I should hope that the Supreme Court strikes down any federal law prohibiting abortions. If the states want to ban partial birth abortions, that's fine, but a federal ban is an atrocious idea.

The partial-birth abortion ban could at least fall under an unfairly broad interpretation of the commerce clause.
Even that is stretching it, though the Supreme Court's decision in Gonzales v. Raich could indicate otherwise.

He's endorsed moderate candidates (Specter, Riordan, etc.) in Republican primaries.

This is probably the only thing he's done that I would approve of.
