"These folks in this part of the world"  3 X at his press conference just now.   Cringe inducing.  Can you just say New Orleans?  he made it sound like he was talking about Western Sahara or something.  Poor performance, IMO.

Then he would know even less of what he was saying!

"in this part of the world"-  it didn't sound folksy, it sounded detached.

He's from "this part of the world."  Is it a regional thing?

I wish he'd quit the "I'm a stupid hick just like you" act pretty soon.  He has no more elections to win, so he doesn't need to keep it up.

You make it seem like he isn't actually a stupid hick.

That's actually right, he's not a hick.  He comes from a rich Northeastern political dynasty.  He was a witty genius when he ran against Ann Richards, and now he looks like a clueless retard.  Whichever PR aide that told him to put on a folksy village idiot image needs shooting in the face.

I'm kidding. But really, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, and he could never be an eloquent speaker. Don't expect much.

This is not exactly the first time that Bush has been observed using the "this part of the world" line.

Bush was born in Connecticut, yes. So what? He grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas. Kerry was born in Colorado.

Bush may look like a clueless retard, but that's better than being a clueless retard, so I don't know why Joe Republic is talking.

Yet, he's a far better speaker than John Kerry!

Leave it to us Democrats to nominate a poorer candidate.

Bush is terrible in extemporaneous situations.  It has little to do with intelligence, and many intelligent people are not good at speaking extemporaneously.  But watching him in extemporaneous situations makes me wince, because I know he doesn't mean to come across the way he does.

He can be very good in a prepared situation, such as giving a major speech.  His Sept. 20, 2001 speech was a great speech.  But from what I say of him today, he wasn't terribly impressive.

OMG BURN!!!!1

Oh wait.... damn.

In any case, look around you.  You're probably the only one still defending Bush's lack of apparent intelligence.

Actually, he stated that bush looks like a "clueless retard"

Remember, he is currently the most powerful man on the planet and we are a bunch of schmucks on the Internet.

Good point.  I actually don't believe that we've had a stupid president for a very long time.  A truly stupid person would have little chance of getting to the presidency.  Bush is somewhat inarticulate when put on the spot, but I don't believe this signifies stupidity.

And what you said Tredrick reminds me of something George H. W. Bush used to say to his subordinates, "If you're so smart, then why am I president?"  It's very easy to sit back and criticize when you have no responsibility for anything, and I can't help but notice that many of the president's strongest critics don't have a single significant accomplishment to their names.

I watched that short speech of his at lunch.

Yes: Why did he keep referring to a 200 year old American state as "This part of the world", like it was Tanzania. Damned insulting -- those people in New Orleans may be, in one mean-spirited phrase, "livestock for the welfare state", but they are still AMERICANS and deserve better respect.

Then again, when he said, "New Orleans will rise again", that was genuinely inspiring -- even the haters applauded, a little.

So, in all, I give it a C: "D" for the "Buck ns in the savannah" phraseology of his, but "B" for recognizing NOLA as important enough for resettlement.

What's wrong with calling something part of the world? Would you prefer to be considered an alien race or something?

He should have said, "this part of our nation" or "this part of the US" or "this part of America."  To say "this part of the world" almost implies it's a foreign country.

I'm sure it wasn't intentional, and it's not important in the grand scheme of things on its own, but it's just one of those little things.

I can't stand to listen to one of his speeches. I think the man knows what he wants to say, just doesn't know how to express it. I usually change the channel and read a transcript later.
