1788 (for elector Suffolk County)

Jabez Foster     801
Caleb Davis      585
Thomas Davies 132
scattering          278

The legislature chose one elector from among the top 2 candidates in each electoral district, one of which was Suffolk County.  Norfolk County, including at that time the independent towns of Roxbury and Dorchester, was not split off from Suffolk County until 1796.  I don't know whether the legislature picked Foster or Davis, but all 10 Massachusetts electors voted for George Washington and John Adams.

Alright, thanks. How about the following years?

In 1792, Massachusetts chose its electors from multi-member districts.  5 were chosen fromm a district that included Suffolk, Middlesex, and Essex counties.  3 candidates received a majority, and were elected, the other two were chosen by the legislature.  I don't have a breakout by county.

Could you just list the results (candidate and/or party) along with percentages in a timeline as far as they go?

1796 was by single member districts.  This was the first election after Norfolk County (including Dorchester and Roxbury) was set off.  Charleston was still in Middlesex.  Suffolk County consisted of Boston and Chelsea.

The 1st Middle district extended west from Bost a little over 26 miles to Hopkinton.  Thomas Davies defeated Samuel Adams 1,712 to 1,377.

1800 electors chosen by legislature.

1804: Electors chosen statewide (Jefferson received 52.1%), but in Suffolk County it was reversed: Pinckney 59.2%-Jefferson 40.8%.

1808 electors chosen by legislature.

1812 elected by multi-member district.

Suffolk:De Witt Clinton 78.4%-James Madison 21.6%

Clinton carried all Mass districts, including Essex-Middlesex-Suffolk.

1816 electors chosen by legislature

1820 Statewide (and without Maine).  Federalist slate carried Massachusetts, but voted for Monroe.

Suffolk: Federalist 94.9%-Monroe 5.1%

1824: Favorite son easily carried home state and Suffolk county: Adams 73.4%-Crawford 26.6%.  No Jackson or Clay slate, and the Crawford slate was a combination of Federalist and D-R supporters.

1828: Suffolk Adams 78.8%-Jackson 21.2%

1832: Suffolk Clay 59.1%, Jackson 23.6%, Wirt 17.4%

1836: Suffolk Webster 61.9% Van Buren 38.1%

1840: Suffolk Harrison 62.7% Van Buren 36.3%

1844: Suffolk Clay 61.4% Polk 33.9% Birney 4.7%

1848: Suffolk Taylor 62.6% Cass 22.3% Van Buren 15.0%

Van Buren beat Cass statewide.  Suffolk was Van Buren's weakest county, and Taylor's 2nd strongest after Nantucket.

1852: Suffolk Pierce 41.9% Scott 37.7% Hale 12.4% Webster 8%,

More than 1/2 of Webster's votes came from Suffolk.  In the Pierce-Scott race, Suffolk was opposite the state result,  Suffolk was 9.4% below the statewide result.

1856: Suffolk Fremont 45.0%, Buchanan 30.7%, Fillmore 24.4%.

Fremont had a 64.8% statewide majority.  Suffolk was Fremont's weakest county, Buchanan's second strongest (tied with Hampden) after Berkshire, and Fillmore's strongest by a large percentage.

1860: Suffolk Lincoln 48.8%, Bell 25.1%, Douglas 21.2%, Breckinridge 4.3%,

Only county without a Lincoln majority.  Strongest Bell county by 10+%.

That's all I have.

Wouldn't the other results be available on this to full members?
