2017 was the 8th-warmest year on record in Austria, according to the national ZAMG agency, using the SPARTACUS-network of 84.000 weather stations in the country.

2014 was the warmest year on record, followed by 2015, 1994, 2016, 2007, 2002, 2000 and 2017.

The start of this January and the past 2 weeks in general were a fu**ing disaster here in terms of winter weather.

Almost no new snow (even though we had a lot before and it was really cold) and then this thaw weather, which is turning the roads into swamps. It's also way too warm outside right now. Only 0-5°C and it's even raining. Raining !

I hate rain and fog during the winter.

I want the January of last year back, when it had -20°C for about 4 weeks.

After several weeks with almost no snow (just ridiculous thaw weather, rain and fog), we had a significant snowfall today.

And it is projected to continue snowing for the next 5 days ...

Still, no sign of cold air though. Just around 0°C. I want at least -10°C ... (but I guess because of climate change, constantly extremely cold Januarys are a thing of the past).

The world is said to be perishing in Germany tomorrow. But only south of Hamburg. Tongue

I understand the frustration with weather.  It's the same here when they predict heavy snow and then we get 1-2" (3-5cm).  Or in Chicago it just rains and then gets cold.

But we had a hell of a month in the eastern U.S.  Midwinter ice cover on the great lakes is the highest since 1989/90.  And the trend seems to have reverse towards an increase in the past 10 years!

There were literally people and bikes blown up in the air today in middle-Germany.

And down (or up ?) here, there's a lot of snow on the way over the next 4-5 days. Probably a meter (3 feet) or so. I wonder if this storm is part of the remnants from that storm that hit the US East Coast a while ago ...

And Moscow saw a record low 6 minutes of sunshine during December.

Just woke up and it dropped about 1.5 feet of fresh snow overnight.

Time for snowshoeing over the weekend.

Temperatures of 2 degrees below zero Fahrenheit were record just a couple of counties to my west on Wednesday morning with 9 degrees at my apartment. That first reading is the coldest for the area since December 1989.  Second is coldest since February 2011 I believe (the week when an ice/snow storm hit DFW when we were hosting the SuperBowl...)

And, we finally had our first day that was both warm and sunny (all recent warm days had been cloudy) today.  We were in the mid-60s under bright sunshine, and all traces of snow are gone.  The long range forecast looks warm, so I imagine we will see a few isolated things trying to bloom soon (last winter they started trying to bloom in December and kind of stayed in a weird almost blooming state until late February when they really could).

The crazy thing is that we beat the forecast by 10-15 degrees (depending on where you look).  Tomorrow should be great as well, and, if the sun reemerges early enough, we could make a run at 70.  I have always described the climate here by saying that we get "three and a half" seasons, and we did get a winter this year, but it's probably moving out now after a brutal four weeks.

And it goes from unbearably cold to melting warmth

I just want two weeks of consistent 15-25 F winter weather but that's too much to ask for. Angry

Why would you want any sort of string of days where you have to wear a coat every day?  Whenever there is about a week straight when I can't wear short sleeves, it just creates a sad mood.

In France, heavy rains since December have led to floods in several regions. In Paris the level of the Seine reached 5.8 meters (4 meters above the normal level). The water level will not rise in the next few days, but it will only drop slowly.

Paris is hit every hundred years by a major flood (the last in 1910, level of the Seine at 8.6 meters), today a such flood would have catastrophic economic consequences (30 billion euros of damage). To limit the risks 4 artificial basins were built upstream of Paris, but they are now filled.
Any heavy rain in the coming days could become very problematic.

There will be a massive cold wave coming from Russia early next week ...

Temps are going to drop to -30°C (-22°F) on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the forecast.

There has been what is called a very big Sudden Stratospheric Warming event (SSW), where temperatures spike rapidly in the stratosphere above the Arctic (latitude 65-90N).

This has the effect of breaking the polar vortex into many pieces and pushing it southward away from the Arctic.

The result will be massive blocking high pressure areas, especially near Greenland, while much lower pressure than normal is concentrated in a ring engulfing the mid-latitudes from the western U.S. all the way to Europe and Russia.

The winter of 2009/10 was famous for these types of blocking patterns and they can produce major snowstorms, especially for the mid-Atlantic U.S. and bring Arctic cold into much of western Europe.

There is evidence that these events occur more frequently during periods of low solar activity.  That would explain why they occurred in 2009/10/11 (the latter part of the last solar minimum) and why it might be occurring now (we're headed into the next solar minimum).  By contrast, such events were very rare in the late 1980s and early 1990s when solar activity was very high.

In some isolated, higher valleys maybe -35°C.

Had no class for 2.5 days due to an ice storm here at Oklahoma University, a failure by most global forecast models. The subtropical jet should stay a bit above us, with only windy and cloudy days expected, and temperatures in the 15-20C range. So basically closer to the weather I delt with in Vegas growing up.

Was around 270K or -3C or 25F this morning and I awoke to ice. Yet it was in the 30s (C) back home and I'm jealous.

After a really tough winter with 250% more snow than normal, spring is finally arriving this weekend and next week with temps over 25°C for the first time. Perfect timing for my spring vacation next week.
