*Could House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) win a Republican presidential nomination? He is left-leaning on amnesty, something that the conservative base does not like.

*If Ryan wins the GOP nomination, could Ryan ever win the U.S. presidency?

Could he? In 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, beyond?

Ryan, 47, will turn 48 next year. Since he became a political star in the early 2000s, he has been seen as the future of the Republican Party. That is why Mitt Romney picked Ryan as his vice presidential running mate in 2012.

Could Ryan win the presidency, or is his career over with his economic views?

Before he became Speaker, yes. Not anymore.

The GOP base hates him now. He couldn't even win a Republican primary in all likelihood.

Everyone hates him now. In fact, the reason he didn't want to be Speaker initially was probably because he knew there's no such thing as a popular Congressional leader, and that it would probably kill any future presidential aspirations.

I don't think so. Perhaps he'll give it a try in 2028 or so (like Gingrich 2012 or Pataki 2016 lol), but I doubt he'd win. Normally 2016 should have been his chance. Romney would have endorsed him and he'd be close to Jeb in terms of fundraising. In hindsight he also would have been destroyed by Trump, but who saw Trump coming in January 2015? If I were Ryan in 2014/2015 I definitely would have run. He loves policy and running would have meant giving up the Ways and Means chair, but a decent shot at the presidency would have been worth it. In hindsight he made the right decision though.

Ryan is Speaker of the House btw, he basically is the second most powerful man in the US. By all accounts his political career has been incredibly succesful. Not everyone gets to be president.

No, not anymore. The Speaker of the House is typically more unpopular than the President.

Speaker is a very polarizing position I don't see a Ryan presidential campaign being able to appeal to Democrat voters. He also embodies the Bush era of conservatism dominated by big money, big oil, and defense contractors that turn offs many Trump supporters. I don't see him winning a GOP primary in his "own right" which will cause problems with the far right wing of the party. Overall I don't think Ryan wants to be president anyway especially in today climate but then again he didn't want to be Speaker either. I always felt like Ryan fetishizes over the Ancien Régime of France so I don't see him running for President.

I think his time if Trump never ran would have been in 2016. This is also under the condition that he never becomes Speaker of the House.

Absolutely. I doubt he'll run in 2020 or 2024, but he won't turn 75 until 2045. He could e.g. make a ton of money in private life from 2019 to 2025, serve as Governor of Wisconsin from 2026 to 2034, and run for president in 2036 at age 66. FDR (who wasn't Speaker, but was the 1920 Dem VP nominee) followed a similar trajectory, though at a younger age. Nixon is another example of a guy who was on the national ticket at a young age but didn't become president until awhile later.

The only way I could see it happening at this point would be if the Mueller investigation takes down Pence in addition to Trump and Ryan is still Speaker of the House if and when that happens.

I highly doubt he could win. He is disliked by most from both sides of the aisle. Unless he can change how he is perceived, then I am afraid there is no road to the white house for Ryan.
