The thugs running around with AK-47s, guns, and shooting at helicopters and upturning boats should be taken down, yes. That's too far out of control. Just is another example that the last place anyone wants to be when a disaster, natural or otherwise, strikes is in a city.

They aren't necessarily poor.  Even the rich of New Orleans (the few that didn't evacuate) wouldn't have anything less.

Make no mistake about it, they are the real New Orleans.  No offense to the many innocent people hurt by this, but most of New Orleans is scuzzy.  The streets there simply aren't safe, before or after Katrina.  Everybody is acting all surprised, well, you've obvioulsy never been to NO.  Looting is pretty common there.  Asking people there not to loot is like asking dogs not to bark.

I agree that if they are taking jewlery and TV's they should shoot thim on the spot. I also think the gov't needs to make the hotels open up and let these people in..... they should be given food, but still not looting it. But if it is food and stuff like that, I totaly understand.

I'd steal food and basic neccessities.

Ah, since when are electronics and jewelry "basic necessities?"

Of these two, option one obviously.  It should suprise no one that just under the surface of our sick, unequal, poverty-rife society lies violent revolution.

I find it incredibly comical that anyone would say that 'looting' unstaffed WalMarts, etc., when one is in a condition of complete destitution, starvation, thirst, and complete abandonment by public services is 'wrong'.

After spending some time in NOLA with my brother, we headed back to Baton Rouge. I tried to pursuade him to take a drive through City Park, the big park near the Lake that's now a habitat for the catfish. He just got on I-10 and never stopped.

Now I know why: City Park is an ok place, but get there from the Quarter meant driving through the 9th ward and Mid-City, which has the evilist ghettoes south of Chicago:

The Brown Gridlike Boxes just north of the Quarter and southwest of the Pontchartrain Expressway are the tenements that stretch nearly to the Lake.

And, to think, I nearly got my brother and myself killed just to see a plain park and a brackish lake

Again, you all seem to be 'blaming' the subject peoples for violence.  It is merely their thrashing about under the bootheel - not very pretty, but it is the bootheel that is responsible for it, not the oppressed.

Um, what were in their hands. If the black guy was looting a tv and the white guy was grabbing some cans, the captions were correct. Course, everyone hates blacks so I could be wrong here.

I saw them.  One was from AP, one from AFP.  Different caption writers.

You really don't have to worry about the 9th Ward and Mid City anymore.  They are under water.

There some "looting" in Baton Rouge, by survivors.  They were dropped off without food.

It's become a bit of an 'End of the Earth' scenario from what I can tell. Psychological researchers would have a field day Tongue

Since many looters are acting out of necessity (i.e. those seeking food and water); however, others are motivated by greed (i.e. those taking advantage of the situation to steal luxuries)

The first, I'd say, is normal under the circumstances. After all, people's survival instincts are kicking in. Before, any one, not affected by this natural disaster, sits in judgement on those looting necessities out of desparation, they should consider how they'd react in the same situation

Either way, those committing more wanton acts of violence, etc, who I suspect are criminals anyway, are hampering relief and rescue efforts and must be dealt with severely

Nobody here is condemning those looting out of need - we're against those that are looting out of greed, who as you mention probably contain a good deal of the criminal element.

I can.  Some of the people lost their shoes in the flooding.  They are trying to walk across submerged streets littered with debris.  If they are going to get out, they will need shoes.

A mite patronizing, aren't you?

They stole them b/c they wanted $120 shoes, even waterlogged and sewage-covered ones

If that is true, then by God, stop them!

I have friends from New Orleans, but my family is in BR. If they get hurt because some slumdweller from rapper C-Murder's birthplace thinks it's his God-given right to take by force, then I have no concern if they are (nonlethally) shot.
