Still better than the scum in the media who portray them as one of the major problems now.

When they shoot at the rescue choppers, they are a big part of the problem.

Looting for food and water may be forgivable under the circumstances. (I personally still find it immoral, but, obviously, I am not presently experiencing their desperation, so how much weight my view carries is up to you).

One who loots for anything else is undoubtedly a thug; those in armed gangs are especially dangerous, and should be shot if they fire at law enforcement officers.

That is not exactly what I would call "looting", though. I was talking merely of the fact that people loot.

Which is a fairly common occurrence in situations of a temporary breakdown of society, and one that lawkeepers are accustomed to have as one of their top priorities in flooding.
And I have the feeling that this has gone way beyond ordinary flooding - there's not nearly as much reason that someone will return to pick up their belongings after the water#s gone, simply because it's not clear if the water ever will be gone, for instance. Which means the issue of preventing looting is not nearly as important as normally, and there#s hundreds of extremely pressing problems.

Thugs that should be caught and drowned on site. Pieces of sh*t would be the correct traditional terminology.

I'd steal TVs and guns and loot hospitals instead of seeking aid from authorities. Wouldn't you?

I wouldn't classify stealing food under "looting". Looting is stealing radios, tvs, cameras, and guns from stores.

Looting refers to any stealing, whether it be food, basic neccessities, or TVs.

Some regular looting is one thing. Armed gangs roaming around, that's another. And that's the problem in New Orleans. I'd wipe 'em out.

If I felt I had a chance to sell them later, and had no job (since whatever my job was, it would be gone now. Everybody working in New Orleans a week ago is de facto unemployed now.), no insurance, and no trust in the government? Sure I would. Smiley

How are they going to sell those TVs later?  You think emergency rescue is going to let them take all that with them?

No...but there's no limits to human inventiveness and to human optimism and to human ignoring of odds staked against oneself.
Can't be hard to steal some boats and cars in the current situation, and get your own ass out to Baton Rouge or Jackson. Heard the one about the first bus to arrive at the Astrodome, hours before schedule? That's because it wasn't one of the official buses, and people in it hadn't been to the superdome before. They were just people stranded in Jefferson Parish who heard about the plans, commandeered a bus and drove it to Houston. They let em in, too.

Meant to add "Do they?" to my previous post.  I figured you would be smart enough.

Thing is that the waterlogged areas that are seeing the heaviest looting are all but cot off.  Cars are useless and, as time goes on, roads are being blocked to help control the flow of traffic in and out.

Clearly the looters are not thinking straight.  The best thing to grab would be jewelry and other small, valuable objects that fit in pockets.

They probably are doing just that...it's just that you can't capture that on film well, so for a few bucks they'll pose before cameras with a tv.

Taking food to survive is one thing, firing freaking sniper rifles at helicopters evacuating hospital patients is quite another.
