Okay...I support these protests, but this is ridiculous. If you sit for the US anthem, you should sit for any other anthem being played at the same time, like the Mexican one.

Why would he protest the national anthem of Mexico, when his issues aren't with Mexico, they're with America and its institutional racism? It's not about preferring Mexico over America or ignoring the numerous problems in Mexican society and institutions; it's about supporting the issues of BLM, which are specific to the United States. I'm really not sure how that's so hard to comprehend...

I don't care what Marshawn Lynch does. It is his right to do so. He could stand (or kneel) with his dick hanging out for all I care.

Why

It makes him look like a hypocrite. There's no point to sitting for the US Anthem, then nullifying your protest by standing for another country's anthem, no matter what you think of that country.

Standing and sitting is still a political issue? Can't we all just get over this childish trend?

I don't care what Marshawn Lynch does. It is his right to do so. He could stand (or kneel) with his dick hanging out for all I care.

It's also the right of his corporate sponsors to pull their endorsements if their contracts allow them to do so.

To convey hatred for a country that has allowed you, personally, to prosper, and which has been the place where you have achieved record opportunities is, as far as I'm concerned, wrong.  Now he gets the right to say what he wants, and I'm not looking to void his newly signed contract with the Seahawks (who need him for the playoffs).  But a lot of the whining about "systemic racism" (though not all) is excuse-making for the personally bad choices individuals make.

Systemic racism may cause disparity in sentencing, but it is individual choices that prompt the decisions that cause people to knowingly commit felonies that result in persons being arrested, charged, facing prison, and subject to a criminal justice system that does, sadly involve racially-based inequalities in sentencing.  Marshawn Lynch is a person who, through his position as a sports celebrity, has opportunities to convey that to people.  If he doesn't want to convey that to people, if that's not his calling in life, so be it.  But if he wishes to blame everyone but the criminals committing crimes for our issues in the criminal justice system, he's missed something fundamental.  His stance is an HP stance for the simple reason that it reinforces the problems he professes to want to do something about.

This thread is 2+ years old. Is your post really helpful, or was there just such a pressing need that you had to dredge it back up??

Lynch just signed a contract with the Seahawks, returning to football.  The Seahawks are RB-poor and, apparently, he's been working out.  He's emerging from a 2 year retirement.

We'll see what he does come game time.  He's not a star anymore; he's a guy who has to prove that he's still got it enough to justify his playing time.

It's an old thread, but the basic issues in it go on.  It's an issue of societal vs. personal responsibility.  The idea that it's "systemic racism" that results in African Americans to be subjected to disparities in sentencing is one of a number of legitimate issues in criminal justice that ought to be addressed, but the idea that it's systemic racism that causes individual decisions on the part of individual African Americans to commit crimes at higher rates than other demographics is highly questionable (at best) and utter nonsense (at worst).

I've softened my stance on "The Kneelers" somewhat over time, in that prodding someone to say something that is not on one's mind, or make a gesture indicating something that is not in their heart falls into the category of being "un-American", in that it violates the concept of "Negative Liberty".  I've discussed Erick Erickson's concepts of "Negatlve Liberty" before; it is the right to be a "refusenik" and to not go along with groupthink, or say what's NOT on your mind.  Yes, the NFL can require players to stand if they push the issue, and, yes, NFL players have far more outlets to express their political points of view than they did in 1968 when Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave Black Power salutes at the Olympic podium.  But Lynch's gesture goes to being "anti-American".  If he thinks Mexico is some kind of land of Freedom (or even Equality) that America is not, he will have a rude awakening should he choose to live there as an expat.
