I sometimes laugh when so much fuss is made about this since it is by far the issue I care about least on both sides. I laugh at the Minutemen, and I laugh at the liberals calling the Minutemen racist hicks. I do not care about this in any way whatsoever. I care more about fixing the awful traffic light near the downtown HyVee in my town than I do on immigration in any way, pro- or anti-.

Roll Eyes

You live in Minnesota and don't have to deal with thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the border every single day. It is most definitely not a good thing.

it makes good economic sense.

what does the statue of liberty say...something about bring me your huddled masses

brtd, you know as well as anyone, that a lot of the anti-immigrant fever is fueled by racism.  im not saying that all of those oppossed to immigration are racist, but many are.

^^

That said, option 3. I don't think there's a way to stop all of it, and it's not without some benefits, but we do need to get it down a bit because too much is definitely bad.

One of the top issues.

It's an economic, social and national security issue wrapped up in one. Illegal immigrants help drive down wages, they smuggle drugs and commit crime, and there is always the possibility of international terrorists entering the U.S. through our open borders.

This is an very important issue and one that needs to be resolved in the near future.

A lot of them are yes. Pat Buchanan obviously. But I still don't care.

Although since I like Latin women, I do kind of appreciate it in that way. Probably the only immigration issue I could care at all about was automatic amnesty given to all hot female illegal immigrants (I am dead serious. More good looking women in the country is ALWAYS a good thing)

It's by far the most important issue - legalize all immigration now. It's the free market solution to world poverty. Well, the only one that's got a chance of doing some good, anyways.

Option 4, some of the biggest threats to America come from illegal immigration. Drugs, gang violence, and the possibility of terrorists crossing.

I think it's an important issue and I am very much opposed to much immigration. In the past, immigration generally made America stronger - now I don't think the kind of immigration we're seeing makes America stronger at all - quite the converse, actually.

There is immigration I'm not opposed to, certainly. Students from many countries, educated persons, professionals, and so forth.

Open borders would be a disaster on a scale I don't really want to think about. Hey, if you're a terrorist, have a field day.

I really don't, but I'm from Michigan.

As far as too many people coming over and taking our jobs, I have a simple solution: end welfare and any other free medical aid.   Once we do this, immigrants will have to work for their money and they'll learn the value of a dollar, rather than jumping over and freeloading.  Of course this is mainly the illegals I speak of.  Most of the legals live a fine life over here and are happy to become successful, even if it means 'pulling themselves up by their bootstraps'.  What's great is that when they do, they better appreciate American life (unlike some <glances at opebo>)

As for the political end of it, it's one of the "issues of the month" so Republicans can claim some fame for this congressional session.  You should know this BRTD.

There is no welfare in Mexico. Either Install the welfare there or get rid of it here.

There are alot of hispanic immigrants, some illegal, some not, where I live, and I don't have much problem with them.  They stand at the side of a street in a hispanic area and look for work, they're Day Laborers.  You hire them and they'll build a treehouse, put cement down, anything.

They aren't having as much success as they used to however.  They have recently discovered the power of the frivilous lawsuit, and often after getting hired for a one-day job, will either falsify and injury or intentionally get injured.  Then they go down to the Hispanic law firm and file a lawsuit, win, and escalate to the middle class.

I do believe illegal immigration is a problem.  If we have immigration laws, they must be respected and enforced.  My point about the hispanic immigrants is that they do the work nobody else will do and therefore will only hurt a local economy when they begin to file lawsuits.

--------------------------

I don't know how they win lawsuits come to think of it, being illegals,  I don't know, but that's what I hear.  Take it for what it's worth.

As I always say, it's funny hearing someone who doesn't have to deal with the effects of illegal immigration say that s/he doesn't care about it at all. Obviously since I don't have to deal with hurricanes and tornados and other problems affecting other portions of the country, I don't have to care!!11111 and they might even be good because they bring in hot illegal immigrants!!!!!!!1111111. Give me a break. Try living where I live and maybe you'll think twice before saying that you don't care - that is, if you even have a brain that is capable of processing such a fact.

Personally I don't give a rat's ass about illegal immigration. Its not an important issue to me, its a red herring (or, in a phrase only used on these boards and no where else, a "strawman"). A country needs new people to sustain itself over time and if they aren't born domestically then they'll have to come from other places. Its our immigration policy that seperates us from the demographically "sick" countries in Europe.

The quality of life issues that people complain immigration causes have more to do with our laissez faire Hoover-ite Government, suburban sprawl and car-dependent society. I'm only opposed to the first of those 3 things.

I cannot wait into the Latino gangs spread into suburban Connecticut. Then you'll see how very wrong you are.

The hispanic gangs around here usually stay away from white people.

I don't have a problem with immigration, as long as we control it.  I think it's ridiculous that we effectively penalize people who try to immigrate legally, while tolerating unrestricted illegal immigration.  I believe in the principal that we have the right to choose whom we allow into the country.

The Salvadorian gang that killed the guy in Lynbrook last year didn't.

They're already here.  The Latin Kings were big in Bridgeport and New Haven, and the feds smashed them in the late 1990s but they seem to be coming back.

So far, they have tended to stay in the cities, and murder each other.  There was a big rash of murders in Bridgeport last week, all thought to be connected to drugs.  Sad to say, most people here don't care, as long as it doesn't spill over into their town.
