The veracity of the story is suspect because of its timing.

Moore released a press statement  (to Breitbart lol) basically confirming the story  (Though Moore says she was 17 and that he did not have sex with her)

It'd require a 2/3rds majority. I actually do think this is possible, if only because the GOP knows that any Republican except Moore would be a shoo-in and that way they wouldn't have a pedophile in their caucus, which is bad for PR reasons.

They wouldn't lose it, though. They'd kick Moore out, AL Governor Ivey would pick a Republican replacement (quite likely Strange again), and that person would hold the seat until ANOTHER special election in 2018. There's zero downside to expelling Moore.

Alabama law prohibits withdrawal of candidate from election within 76 days of the election (Ala. Code 17-6-21(c); accord 17-13-23):
 If the GOP withdraws their nomination of Moore, he will remain on ballot but even if he gets most votes, won't be certified as winner b/c party has withdrawn nomination.
