Can we just lock the thread now before TG has to clean up the mess then lock it 5 pages from now?

How prescient this old man's ramblings turned out to be...

MSNBC interviewees are being asked the important question: Is now the time for stricter...security at church entrances.

I don't know how someone can at any time feel happy in this country.

I'm not, for sure.

First confirmed victim is the 14 year old daughter of the pastor.

I need to put my phone down for a bit, obviously. I think I'm having some sort of nervous breakdown

One last horrific tidbit before I go: I was being too generous when I said the gunman wiped out 2% of the town in 10 minutes. It was actually 4% of the town and according to ABC the time between the first and last shots fired was 15 seconds.

15. ing. Seconds. How do you good guy with a gun that?

Tragic and horrifying. Thoughts and prayers are with the victims in Southern Texas.

See you next thread.

I can't believe that's right. Not unless the shooter had some sort of military heavy weapon. It just doesn't seem possible.

Being a Second Amendment absolutist, I am also a First Amendment absolutist.  I don't view this as an inappropriate time to talk about gun control, pro or con.  The incident is gun-related, the debate goes on, and the Constitution still applies, so why not?

Very rarely will I complain about being offended.  That's because the First Amendment gives the right to offend.

The issue is not whether or not folks should discuss this issue "at a time like this".  The issue is whether or not folks can be grown-up about it and discuss the real issues here.  And there ARE real issues; they're right in front of us now.

Not now names are usually withheld prior to release to remove online profiles. So whatever we can learn from social media is not available.

They say that after every shooting.

Honestly I'd rather them do that than hide behind thoughts and prayers every month, and I say this as a gun owner

Why qualify that statement? There's nothing inherently wrong with being a gun owner; they can serve numerous non-violent purposes and can be effective tools for safety when in properly trained hands.

I never understood the desire to attack gun owners or even all guns as if they're inherently evil. Only a very small number of guns are ever used for violence against another person and it's usually related to crime, mental illness, or terrorism (the latter two not necessarily mutually exclusive). Thus, the problem is that of mental illness and society, particularly our failure to adequately address mental health in this country. Suicide by firearm is considerably more common than homicide by firearm; I believe by a ratio of 3:1, IIRC.

Of course, I staunchly oppose the NRA and its political activities, support a total ban on the types of guns that can be used to easily commit such mass murder, and far stricter regulations on the sale of firearms (mental health evaluations, background checks, safety courses, etc...). But firearms aren't inherently terrible things; they are multipurpose tools and it's the handlers who're chiefly responsible for what's done with them. It's also the responsibility of the government to ensure proper regulation of firearms, easy and widespread access to mental health care, and the alleviation of social ills that are the underlying causes of crime.

No, sometimes they say the shooting didn't happen at all.

A good guy with a gun took out his rifle and started shooting at the bad shooter, thus thwarting the mass shooting.

Yeah, I was going to say: if only everybody inside that church had guns to protect themselves, it probably wouldn't have happened. More guns is always the answer.
