As a popular actor, it wouldn't hurt his career in the slightest and he could serve as a model for closeted gay people and contribute to the normalization of homosexuality. Instead, he remained in a glass closet and pointedly refused to come out publicly. But now, he's trying to ride the back of the strong community built by thousands of tireless lgbtq people who went through terrible things just so that the next lgbtq youths will have an easier time coming out and living their lives.

Exactly. Representation is so important, and what helped me come to terms with my own sexuality was seeing successful, well-adjusted people come out and openly embrace who they were. Something like this—a gay person only coming out after being accused of sexually assaulting a minor, and effectively admitting to it—is damaging.

When Spacey hosted the Tonys earlier this year, he made a couple of jokes about "closets" and coming out of them, and a lot of LGBT advocates were angry, because he basically wanted to just make jokes about his reputation, instead of being proactive. I thought that was a bit of an overreaction, but now, it's clear to see how selfish and oblivious he is, and has always been.
