Why do you assume he'll only make $8-10 per hour?  You have no idea of his work experience, and no basis to judge what he might make. 

In nay case, in expensive cities like Boston or New York, few jobs pay that little, if you have any type of competence or good work history.  Even clerical/secretarial jobs pay, at minimum, $40-50K in places like Boston or New York.

Answer: he isn't.  He's an authority on Thai hookers, lady boys, and the best places to buy opium.  Period.
