The Joy of Packing
DanielX:
Today, I'm packing stuff for college. I've been packing on-and-off since Saturday, but today's the big day - i leave tomorrow. Thankfully, I'm moving an hour away from here - so if i make any mistakes, they can be rectified by the next weekend <And boy, I'm glad for that!>.
There are some reasons for long packing times. First off, I'm an overpacker. I own fifty-one star trek books (45 paperbacks, 2 hardcovers, the encyclopedia, spaceflight chronology, technical manual, and star charts). I was originally going to bring thirty-two. Mom was not pleased, and come to think of it, it wouldn't've been a good idea. After days of winnowing, I'm down to eight (7 favorite paperbacks and the star charts), where it's staying. Second, it gives time to ask for permission beforehand and to beg forgiveness afterwards for raids (i go upstairs and raid for school supplies, raid the toolbox for a screwdriver, raid the closets for hangers, etc).
I'm going to pack my laptop soon (but I might still show up; i'll just use my parent's desktop); clothes are next - i've already sorted out stuff i'm not bringing with me, and I'm not going to bed until everything but stuff i need for the morning is packed (helps that most of it is stacked on my bed!).

Good luck with the move, man. You said you were moving to Boston. What type of job do you have there?
Dan-- I understand fully. Packing sucks. Last time I moved, I just had the movers pack for me. I'd rather put a bullet in my head than pack. But at least you're not moving a whole house. You only live an hour away, so you can easily correct your packing mistakes. Are you going to have a car at school?

No car. It was a choice between living on-campus and a car - couldn't afford both without a job. I picked on-campus, because an hour's a helluva commute for a kid who's only had his license since April. Also, the fact that I got a single dorm helped (I do share a bathroom though).
I'm mostly packed now. Clothes, books, supplies, laptop, a poster or two, and the plunger. I'll leave my toothbrush, radio, alarm clock, and a few other things packed in the morning.
