Like the "Merge a County" thread but the opposite.

Los Angeles, Maricopa, Harris and Cook all seem like good luck places to start.

LA county. Either Antelope Valley (Lancaster, Palmdale, Santa Clara) vs the South, and perhaps another cut along the Eastern San Gabriel region.

Maricopa can easily be cut into a Phoenix area county, a southeastern county (Mesa, Tempe, Chandler), and a Western county (Glendale, Peoria, Sun City, and the large rural 'arm')

San Bernardino and Riverside should be cut between the Inland Empire bits closer to LA, and the more desert/rural cities like Palm Springs and Barstow/Victorville to the East.

King County Washington, between the east and west sides of Lake Washington.

Fulton County GA - Atlanta and Milton.

Jefferson County Louisiana. Metairie to the north of the river, everything else to the south.

Problem:
If the Kentucky Bend became its own County, it would instantly be the least populated County in the entire country.  It has 18 people in it.  Kalawao County, Hawaii is currently the least populated County in the country, at 88 people (nearly 5 times that of Kentucky Bend); but it is not an autonomous county.  The least populated autonomous county in the country is Loving County, Texas, at 113 people (just over 6 times that of Kentucky Bend).

It should then be merged with Lake County, TN, of course.

Why? Isn't Richmond already the smallest of the five NYC counties?

North of the Expressway is pretty Democratic. South of the Expressway is heavily Republican.

I have a bunch, but a couple of the main ones are Los Angeles County and Maricopa County, which can be split into 4 each.

Maricopa

Maricopa County (center) - seat Phoenix
Mesa County (east) - seat Mesa
Valley County (southwest) - seat Buckeye
Hassayampa County (northwest) - seat Surprise

Los Angeles

Los Angeles County (south) - seat Los Angeles
Antelope County (north) - seat Lancaster
San Gabriel County (east) - seat Pasadena
San Fernando County (west) - seat San Fernando Valley

The Birch County proposal is the only one that makes any sort of sense in South Carolina, and even then, it probably would be better and easier to merge the area into Newberry County.

In Oregon, I'd split the coastal parts of Lane and Douglas Counties.

There is a pretty large cultural split in Shelby County, TN between Memphis and the Memphis suburbs.  The TN-9 versus TN-8 border might be a good splitting point.

Or just make Memphis an independent city.

Splitting Memphis off from Shelby's a bad idea. Just look up the river at St. Louis.

Anyway, I support Skykomish County and other such proposals for areas where counties can't be reached from one end to the other.

San Juan County, Utah would be one to split mainly because there's been pretty consistent lawsuits about the districting of the county causing under-representation of Native Americans in the County Commission and School Board http://fox13now.com/2017/07/21/san-juan-co-ordered-to-redraw-boundaries-in-gerrymandering-lawsuit/
